(25 Jan 2022) ALEXIS MABILLE'S LATEST HAUTE COUTURE COLLECTION EMBRACES SHIMMERY FEMININITY
A single butterfly earring. That was the most delicate of leitmotifs for lauded French designer Alexis Mabille's Paris show, who took the shapes and textures of butterfly wings and flower petals to produce an organic-infused display.
  
Silhouettes were truncated or unfurled at the top and bottom in swooshes of silk that resembled an opening flower. Or was it a butterfly emerging from the cocoon?
  
Either way, an organic feel pervaded the 26 couture designs.
  
A white silk train billowed majestically out from the bottom of a sheer bustier corset that sported embroidered lines resembling veins. Elsewhere, pleated silk hung beautifully down from a pink halter neck gown, evoking the delicate crinkling in wings.
  
A black lace hood hung over one model’s head as if she were in mourning. She may even have been a Black Widow spider.

ALEXIS MABILLE PRESENTS BOLD HAUTE COUTURE COLLECTION
French designer Alexis Mabille chose the Musee Bourdelle in Paris as a backdrop for his Spring-Summer 2011 Haute Couture show on Monday (24 JAN 2011), with the idea that the magnificent sculptures would reflect the sculptural qualities of his collection.
"It's not really a story, it's more work and the volume and the fabric," Alexis Mabille explains.
"It's more an idea about showing the pureness of the clothes at first when you start to create something, you look at the volume, and your mannequin with the raw material. It's like a sculptor, it's like an architect, we're doing some maquettes with paper. It's all this idea about no color, just to express the volume and after to show what would it be with colors and elemental fabric."
A plethora of long white dresses and goddess gowns made this collection an inspiration for brides-to-be, with satin, organza, trains, lace, embroidered flowers and Mabille's signature bows.
For those not getting married this spring, there were short tunic dresses and diamond halter gowns in colored sequins or in rich shades such as coral and burgundy.

Alexis Mabille hinted at the iconography of the femme fleur in his couture collection—a reference that could sound a bit trite and cliché today, as women don’t live lives of perfection, botanical or otherwise. But in the French couture, dreaming still reigns supreme. “I was actually thinking about the beauty of blooming again after the hardships we’ve been through,” he said on a Zoom call from his atelier. “Under the circumstances, women haven’t been given the chance of enjoying glamour and looking their most sensational selves. I was thinking of a spirit of renaissance, of blooming again to a joyful life.”

Mabille said that for him couture is a space of experimentation, a sort of playground where he can indulge his creativity. “Couture isn’t only a dream, but the panache of savoir faire which gives you the tools to go further, to master detailings and fabrications, giving shape to incredible architectural volumes,” he said. “As a créateur, in couture you can give yourself the pleasure of being selfish, as you aren’t burdened by marketing worries. The more exceptional a piece is, the more chances it has that a client will fall in love with it. Couture is a rather emotional experience—obviously, if you have the means to afford these emotions.”

Mabille’s idea of the femme fleur was translated quite literally, yet beautifully, in a series of sculptural silhouettes, including an empire-waisted gown featuring flower bouquets blooming on its décolletage and a golden lurex tuxedo with a hood in the shape of a rosebud. Elsewhere, pouf sleeves were filled like crystal vases with silicone tulips. “They look and feel so real to the touch, it’s almost disturbing,” he joked.

The designer’s “borderline sense of color,” as he called it, was let loose in a series of spectacular millefeuille tulle capes. Gradient-hued in tones of amaryllis red, wisteria, and Pierre de Ronsard pink, they indeed looked like psychedelic, crazy blooms. “I wanted a flattering feel of sensuality, excitement, fun,” said Mabille. “Couture for me has to exude an ésprit ludique.”
