Alteryx Help - The Many Costs of Not Making Data Driven Decisions

Is Cost Your Biggest Issue?

By now, you understand the issue of acquiring a new software or additional functionality and really not applying the proper training.
That “cost” can mean a number of things. One of the many things we’ve learned growing Data Prep U is that there are many types of costs.
Yes, of course, there's the upfront cost - the actual cost of the software. Or the cost of hiring a consultant, by the hour or by the day.
The real and biggest costs are the soft costs. The hidden costs. The costs of what happens if someone is not getting the full value out of that software.
Or what happens if they're only using 10% of the new software?
Or someone builds a solution and, once the data changes, that solution breaks. And how quickly can you fix it, at what opportunity cost?
Real Client Example: The Cost To Your Sales Team, And Lost Revenues
We’ve got a customer, with thousands of employees and a good-sized marketing department.
Every month they ran a live webinar and generated a large number of hot leads.
And, as we all know, hot leads get colder the longer they are ignored.
It was taking them 30 days to manually review the participants’ details, and match those leads to the data on the CRM. Only then did the Sales team get access to the data, and could follow up.
Those 30 days required incredibly tedious work, matching up data for hundreds or thousands of data points from every event,
So there was a “human misery” to the work - something that employers are realising leads to high turnover of staff.
But the data was also stale by the time it was given to the sales team. Hot leads were now warm leads, at best.
This was happening every single month and the investment in running the live webinar was being lost or certainly minimised.
The irony was that they already had the software to solve this problem - they just didn’t know how to use it. They didn’t realise it could be used for this kind of situation.
By working with the, teaching them, supporting them, and helping with the customisation, we got them a process that was transformative.
Behind the scenes we did the implementation work that was a little but more complex.
All of this got a 30 day process with one person working full time on it, down to fully completed within 2 hours. 100% accurately, and always on time.
And, to repeat, this was with software that they had already purchased.
The real impact was not the cost of the software or of our support, training and consulting.
The real impact was on sales and revenues. Plus making the marketing person’s job a lot easier and fulfilling, allowing them to focus on analysing the data and planning for making the next webinar even better.
Yes, there was a Dollar cost.
But they’d also had software they were, at best, under-using, so that was a real cost, with a multi-year license, potentially going unused.
Education First, With “Over The Shoulder” Support
At Data Prep U, our approach is, and always will be, education first.
Though you have options.
Some people are not interested in learning and just want the outputs. Others don’t have the time. Others really want to get their hands dirty.

Our advice is always to evolve at your own speed, using our suite of beginner to intermediate and advanced trainings. They all give you practical, hands-on use cases, so you practice as you learn.
The Other Costs Of The Consulting Route
The other common option is to bring in an hourly or daily paid consultant.
That creates the challenge of the lasting value you get. There is a transfer of the built solution, but limited transfer of knowledge, and no ongoing support. They’ve moved on to their next project or client.
This route is not even scalable except for the largest of organisations, with the cost growing almost out of control as people hear use-cases of what the platform can do, and start adding requests.
As a result, your goal of having a “culture of analytics” or “culture of data” gets lost when the consultant leaves.
Without internally driven, ongoing learning, at best you’ll be using 5% or 10% of the full capability of your software - while you are still paying 100% of the license cost.
