The 'avant-garde' is often used to describe something new or cutting-edge in art but where did the term come from and what does it mean?
Who are the avant-garde and what did they do to become to be known as such?

Emerging in the mid-19th century, the avant-garde received their name for their fighting spirit. Avant-garde is French for ‘vanguard’; a military term used to describe the front-line of an army moving into battle. Artists were compared with these soldiers, as they were often a group force, challenging long-established concepts and ideas about art and fighting an entrenched establishment.

The early avante-garde artists such as Courbet, Gauguin and Kirchner were regarded with great hostility, because they pushed accepted boundaries. As these establishments denied the work public exposure, the avant-garde fought this censorship of their art.

Abstract
Technology has become increasingly pervasive in the creative and experimental environment of the avant-garde fashion runway, particularly in relation to its garments. However, several disciplines are often necessary when exploring technologies for the construction of expressive garments (e.g. garments that respond to their environment), creating a barrier for fashion designers that has limited their ability to leverage new technologies. To help overcome this barrier, we designed and deployed Brookdale, a prototyping system for wearable technology consisting of new plug-and-play hardware that can be programmed using drag-and-drop software. Brookdale was created using a 24-week participatory design process with 17 novice fashion-tech designers. At the end of the 24 week process, designers showcased their Brookdale-enhanced garment collections at an avant-garde fashion-tech runway show in New York City. We report on the experiences, outcomes, and lessons learned throughout this process, and describe results from interviews with the fashion-tech designers 16 weeks after the fashion show, demonstrating the lasting positive impact of Brookdale.

Today I'm going to show you how I created an avant garde beauty look with the Pantone Color of the Year, 2022 Classic Blue.

Every year Pantone selects a color of the year. This is color is mean't to be reflective of cultural and artist trends and you'll see it in interior design, graphic design, fashion design -- basically everywhere.

As soon as Pantone announces this color annually I immediately book a shoot featuring the color.

For my first shoot themed around this color I decided to do something very stark and eye catching, so I teamed up with an incredible hair and makeup team to create a look loosely inspired by Chinese porcelain design but with a very creative twist.

For this shoot I chose a 70-200mm lense and a beauty dish centered above my subject while shooting against a grey background. As I was shooting I realized that a white background was needed to really make the image pop off the canvas. So instead of the arduous tasks of dismantling my current steamless and swapping it out for white I just decided to setup a 3x4 softbox behind the subject.

☝️Tip - Move the softbox a little further away from the subject so avoid wrapping and lens flare.

During the process I tried silver and white reflectors to fill in the shadows under the chin but in the end I decided I liked the dimension that shadows were creating.

☝️You have to experiment to see what works best for your image!

Lastly, I applied a number of changes to the raw processing in Capture One. I increased the contrast dramatically, pulled out the reds and yellows to get the porcelain skin look, and after the processing change the shot was basically black, white and blue hues.

Of course to get that perfect skin look there was local dodging and burning, frequency separation and retouching techniques applied.

The end result was created with a simple 2 light setup that in my opinion is a unique play on the theme classic blue.
