Spring loaded ball detent forms a bearing surface which retracts and then snaps into opposing hole or groove. Push fit Ball Plungers are used for locating or positioning in drawers, doors, dies and other fixtures. Also known as Ball Detents, Spring Loaded Plungers and Spring Plungers.

Due to their self-retaining design, the press-fit ball plungers can be securely installed by hand in an ordinary drilled hole. The slotted end of the thermoplastic body expands to compensate for hole tolerances up to .008" oversize. A sturdy shoulder provides a fixed seating position and positively resists detent force. The installation hole can be counterbored to recess the shoulder.

Ball and Detent is A simple mechanical arrangement used to hold a moving part in a temporarily fixed position relative to another part.

The ball slides within a bored cylinder, against the pressure of a spring, which pushes the ball against the detent, a hole of smaller diameter than the ball.

When the hole is in line with the cylinder, the ball falls partially into the hole under spring pressure, holding the parts at that position.

Additional force will push the ball back into its cylinder, compressing the spring, and allowing the parts to move.

Ball catch latches used on closet doors and interior double doors are prone to failure. This video from The Honest Carpenter will show you how to fix your existing ball catch latch. BUT, it will also teach you a better option for replacing these faulty latches--and it only costs about $1!

Ball catch latches stop working when they are no longer properly aligned with the strike plate on your door. Generally the ball catch is either too low, so the door doesn't stay shut. Or it is too high, causing the door to bang against the casing.

In some cases, the ball catch latch has frozen in place and no longer retracts because of metal corrosion, a faulty spring, or dust in the mechanism.

How To Replace / Repair A Ball Catch Latch:
1) Examine your existing ball catch latch
2) Raise or lower ball catch using needlenose pliers. (Insert plier tips into slots around ball catch--works for most units.)
3) Reinstall ball catch latch at desired height.
4) If latch is stuck, consider lubricating with WD-40
----OR---

Remove latch and replace with magnet catch!
1) Pop out existing ball catch latch
2) Put double-sided tape on back of magnet catch
3) Press magnet catch into place on underside of stop trim
4) Press spurs of metal plate into surface of door
5) Mount metal plate of magnet catch in this location.
6) Adjust magnet catch position--tighten with screws.
