2021 is fast approaching and I am changing up a lot of my workflow heading into the new year. One of those changes is the contract that I am using for my up and coming clients. Using a contract as a graphic designer is an absolute must in my opinion, and in the video you will learn why that is.

In the past I have been caught out and subsequently lost money simply because I failed to use a contract. That was quite a few years ago now, but it taught me a lesson as a designer, and that is to always use a contract no matter who you are working with. You need financial and legal security when heading into a project, and equally so, the client will want a degree of security also. So please do check out the contract template, and use it on your very own design projects each and every time.

In this week's video I am designing a logo for a commission. A friend of mine wanted me to design a logo for them to use for a YouTube channel that they are thinking of making. This video was meant to have commentary with it as normal, but I accidentally made some mistakes and the export didn't get the audio. Thankfully it will not happen again, as I figured out what went wrong. Next week there will not be a video, so that means the next one will come out on July 29th. I get it ______ is kind of abstract and the words don’t lend themselves to cool visuals. I’ve received some logos and some of them weren’t bad but that being said, I’m very open to the ridiculous. Attention grabbing visuals as long as they’re well done. I have a deep appreciation for the off-beat, over the top, and silly things - again, as long as they’re done well. If you have an absurd idea… even if it doesn't match the words __________, bring the madness.

A giant fire-breathing grizzly bear with a propeller beanie and a jet pack, clutching a train? Cool. A 19th century nature sketch of a proud fox with a vintage camera strapped on its head? Awesome. A squirrel with camera, riding a dog as it chases a cat? Nice.

I’m totally serious. The money is guaranteed in this contest. If we end up with a strategically safe logo for _________, thats fine. But I’m hoping for one that people see and think, that’s crazy, what the heck is __________?!” This is your chance to run with that crazy idea that always made you laugh but was too risky to ever use. Take that idea, stuff it with dynamite, wrap it in bacon, hurl it into the sun, then wrap the sun with more bacon.

Boy, do I fully understand that question. I spent hours and hours wasting my time when I first started searching online for: “what should I charge as a freelance graphic designer?” “how to price your first graphic design work.” “how to charge clients as a graphic designer.” “how much should you charge for graphic design?” and so many other iterations of these. I really enjoy making these videos where I take existing designs (today that is from Adidas) and then revamping them or making alternations to improve the effectiveness of the design itself. I simply use graphic design principles, my own style, and an eye for design, to elevate the end result and make them more functional.
It was difficult finding 'bad' designs for Adidas simply because most of the graphic design for Adidas is of such a high level created by top tier agencies. However I have found 4 designs that I think can be improved and with my changes, I hope you agree too!

Are you a graphic designer, web designer, package designer, or motion designer? Use these 3 Steps to Improve your design process:

1. Design in black and white - As we all know, Design can be frustrating, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. I find it helps to focus my attention on only whats important. That's why I design in black and white. It forces me to focus on only the most important aspects of the logo: Hierarchy, Contrast and Legibility.

2. Focus on legibility - Legibility is essential but can get in the way of some really fun ideas. Sometimes In pursuit of a clever idea, we get carried away to the point the logo becomes hard to read. Rookie mistake. The solution? Periodically check in and ask yourself (or someone else) does the logo read well?

3. Giving a good Critique is an art - There’s much more to it than simply throwing out random opinions. Whether critiquing your own work or someone else’s, it’s important to remember that a good critique follows a process. I think of it like peeling an onion: Start by simply describing what you’re seeing. Then, say 1 thing you like and 1 thing that feels kinda funny. Then, move into what isn’t working and why. Finally, suggest ways to fix it.

These are 3 small things you can start doing that will improve your logo design skills. Getting better is a slow process, but these 3 things are a step in the right direction. We will have more tips for you soon. Keep learning stuff, one day you will be great! Thanks for watching. The Futur.
