Paragraph border enables you to create a border around one or more paragraphs.

You can customize corner designs to highlight the paragraph with beautiful effects.

To apply paragraph border to the text in a text frame, select the text frame or place the pointer on the text in the text frame.

Do one of the following:
- From the Control panel (Window - Control) menu, choose Paragraph Borders and Shading.
- From the Paragraph Styles panel (Window - Styles - Paragraph Styles) menu, choose Style Options and select Paragraph Border.
- From the Paragraph panel (Window - Type and Tables - Paragraph) menu, choose Paragraph Borders and Shading.

In the Border dialog you can choose the following options:
- Top: Specify a value of top border for a particular paragraph.
- Left: Specify a value of left border for a particular paragraph.
- Bottom: Specify a value of bottom border for a particular paragraph.
- Right: Specify a value of right border for a particular paragraph.
- Type: Select the stroke type for paragraph border.
- Color: Select a stroke color for paragraph border.
- Tint: Specify a tint value of stroke for a paragraph border.
- Overprint: Select this option to apply overprint.
- Gap Color: Specify a color to appear in the space between dashes, dots, or multiple lines in a patterned stroke.
- Gap Tint: Specify a tint (when a gap color is specified).
- Cap: Select a cap style to specify the appearance of both ends of an open path.
- Join: Specify the appearance of the stroke at corner points.
- Corner Size And Shape: Select a size and shape for the corners. You can select individual size and shape for each of the four corners.
- Offsets: Specify the value to extend border beyond the object margins.
- Edges: Select the position of the edges of border for a particular paragraph.
- Width: Specify the width of border. Selecting Column spans border across text frame, selecting Text extends border across text.
- Display Border If Paragraph Splits Across Frames/Columns:
Select this option to display a border when the text in a paragraph flows across columns or from one threaded frame to another.

Outline:
How to create the table
- open a new page or your document
- draw yourself a text frame using the type tool or select where you want your table to be in your existing text; just make sure you see a cursor
- go to your menu, table, insert table or ctrl-alt-shift-t (cmd alt shift t on mac)
- within the "insert table" dialog box choose your inital table dimensions - you can always change this later, just get yourself something to work with
- header rows are rows that stay on the top of your table, even if it rolls over to another page ---- as it in repeats on every new page
- same with footer rows
- choose your table style (if it's a new doc you're not going to have a choice, but you can make one right now if you want to. We'll cover how to do that next anyway, but this is a shortcut way to access setting up table styles.)

How to add more rows or columns
- to add more rows
-- can do it from the control panel
-- if you're at the end of the table and need a few more rows, just hit tab until you get as many as you need.
--alternatively you can right click and add more
- to add more columns, you have to right click and add more
- clicking within a cell
- selecting a whole row or column
- how to move entire columns or rows

How to Style the Table
- show by example
- click T in Swatches to set colors for text or background
- show how to set cell and table styles

How to Set Table Cell Height
- drag and set style
- set it in the Control Panel at the top

How to Style Borders Using Stroke Menu
-- triple click to deselect all strokes; and then you can just turn on the ones you want

Extra tips:
- merged cells (works the same as google docs and office products like word and excel)
-- highlight the ones you want to merge or unmerge and click the button in control panel
- keep with next row - keeps your text together which is a god send when you're doing your pagination (layouts) in larger docs

I've been admiring the lettering work on vintage insurance maps lately. These old documents were originally drawn up by hand by master penmen, who illustrated the title page with ornate lettering and detailed embellishments.
