How Color Works (In Video Games)

Colour, in itself, is nothing more than a sensation. It is made up of a series of wavelengths, which are received and separated by our eyes, then later processed in the brain, where they evoke subconscious reactions. There are many studies showing how color, as a single stimulus can make people feel calm, aggressive and even hungry.

Today we’re exploring how color is used in game design to subtly manipulate and transport you into a new, believable universe.

When color psychology is used in video games, it helps the player establish spatial relationships, identify objects, interact with the environment and experience the full mood and atmosphere of the scenes they’re playing.

Different colour and lighting aspects are carefully manipulated to invoke the desired responses in players, and colour grading is given a special amount of care to ensure the feelings it induces complement the story.

Reprogramming Diversity in DIY Game Design | Stephanie Orme | TEDxPSU

In an effort to combat the lack of diversity in the video game design industry, the past few years have a surge of inclusivity projects designed to bolster participation from marginalized groups in game design. These projects take on many forms, from training-based workshops like Girls Make Games to teach-yourself approaches. The abundance of these inclusivity resources has created the belief among many that, today, “everyone can make video games.” While on the one hand, these resources can be important tools for encouraging girls, people of color, and LGBTQ individuals to pursue game design careers, the rhetoric of “everyone can make games” might be interpreted as meaning everyone has an equal opportunity have a career in game design, despite challenges these individuals may encounter along the way.
This talk emphasizes how we should not rely on inclusivity initiatives as the sole solution to the game design industry’s diversity concerns. Such initiatives place the burden of shifting the industry’s culture of sexism, racism, and other discriminatory practices on those who are marginalized by it, rather than seeking reform from the game industry itself. I discuss the steps that must be taken by proponents of diversity in gaming, including work policy changes, collective organizing and mentorship, and allyships with industry leaders. Only then can we ensure these initiatives are preparing individuals for long and successful careers in game design.
Stephanie Orme is a PhD candidate in the Bellisario College of Communications at The Pennsylvania State University, where she studies the video game industry from a feminist perspective. Her work examines the intersections of race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and other identities as they relate to digital game production and video game players. Stephanie has published in communication journals, books, and has presented at several conferences. She is the Vice-Chair Elect for the Game Studies Division of the National Communication Association. Interactive media has the incredible potential to deliver a wide range of immersive, emotional experiences, yet year after year the gaming industry seems to fall back on one underlying theme -- kill or be killed. A statistical breakdown of games featured in Electronic Entertainment Expo press briefings in 2017 reveals that 82% of new titles focus on combat as the core gameplay mechanic. Imagine all the stories we're missing out on because game developers insist on building virtual worlds we experience from behind the barrel of a gun or the blade of a sword.

Game Analytics for Game User Research - Anders Drachen, PhD

In this talk, Anders Drachen, Ph.D. will focus on how the game analytics toolkit fits into the daily operations of game development, whether you are in a small or big studio, and how it intersects games user research in particular.

Game analytics provides new ways to conduct user research, counteracting some of the weaknesses of traditional approaches while retaining essential compatibility with the methodologies of games user research. This talk provides an overview of what game analytics is and how it fits within the daily operations of game development across studio sizes, with an emphasis on the intersection with GamesUR and the synergies that can be practically leveraged across analytics and user research.

The value proposition of game analytics to game user research is simple: game analytics provides new ways to conduct research, counteracting some of the weaknesses of traditional approaches while retaining essential compatibility with the methodologies of GamesUR.

To use terminology from ‘Doom’, we are going from a single-barreled shotgun to a double-barreled one – with a grenade launcher slung underneath.

Anders will cover the theory of game analytics and what questions it can answer; how game analytics is performed; and what game analytics can offer to games user research practitioners.

#gamesUR Conference
Games User Research focuses on players’ psychology and their behaviour via techniques such as playtesting, analytics, expert analysis, and others. Game User Researchers aim to help game developers deliver players the best gaming experience possible.

The #gamesUR Conference is a biannual gathering of the world's top professionals in games user research. For more information visit gamesurconf.com

Juicy Game Design: Understanding the Impact of Visual Embellishments on Player Experience

Juicy Game Design: Understanding the Impact of Visual Embellishments on Player Experience
Kieran Hicks, Kathrin Gerling, Patrick Dickinson, Vero Vanden Abeele

CHI PLAY '19
Session: Dissecting the player experience

Abstract
Visual embellishments (VEs) are design elements that support information already conveyed by other means. In games, this concept is known as juiciness, and refers to the provision of redundant feedback in situations where a single player action triggers multiple non-functional reactions. Academia and industry both view the concept as a means of improving player experience; however, empirical evidence to back the assumption is lacking. Here, we present findings from two studies: one initial study with 40 participants comparing the effects of visual embellishments in two research games, the Frogger-clone Cuber, and the FPS game Dungeon Descent, and a second study with 32 participants using the commercially available game Quake 3 Arena. Results show that visual embellishments contribute to the visual appeal of all games, but only affects aspects such as competence under specific circumstances. We discuss implications of our findings for the integration of visual embellishments and juiciness, and their relevance for game development.

Accessible Game Design: It’s 2 point 1 fun! - Cyndi Wiley (A11yTalks - June 2020)

Long before we crushed tiny candies on our screens, dice games were among some of the first known to be played as far back as 5000 BCE. The theory of play is a well-researched area with roots in anthropology and psychology. Games have emerged throughout human history as an expression of play. Accessible game design is an area that has not been as well researched. In this presentation, you will learn how to get started checking games for accessibility using WCAG 2.1 standards, and how to get started designing your own games.
