How did it work until today?

Topology optimization is a numerical technique to optimally distribute material in a given space. This method made its way to commercial products in the late 90s and has not evolved much since then. With this hint, the user has to manually adjust parameters and re-create the design manually using additional modeling tools, since the original model often cannot be used directly.

What is the problem with the current process?

The manually re-created structure is only an approximation to the optimal design. Therefore, iterative model refinement is often required. The manual modeling, analysis, and enhancements are tedious and usually take days or even weeks for a highly skilled engineer to complete, depending on the complexity of a model.

Generative Design - The Adventioneers (Project Prototype)



This is part 2 of my Generative Design project. In this video I test my railing bracket.

Using AI Generative Design to Optimize Material Usage and Strength in Metal Fasteners.

Unobtrusive household items like metal fasteners are actually multibillion dollar industries, with billions of metal parts manufactured every year. Considering the massive amount of water, energy, and the land footprint it takes to make metal, even a small 5% decrease in the amount of metal per part would save billions of dollars in both manufacturing costs and avoided environmental damage. We plan to combine Artificial Intelligence with a branch of design called “Generative Design” to create new models and ideas from scratch without following preconceived notions of what objects should look like. These generated objects are stronger, lighter, and use less materials than their human-designed counterparts. We usually think of sustainability as big pieces, like recycling, but small and often ignored parts add up to have a great impact on the world.

Generative Design - Designing a STRONGER Chair in Fusion 360



Generative Design in Fusion 360 uses computer algorithms to output potential design ideas based on manufacturing, materials, stress, and other requirements.

In this video, we’ll take a look at creating a chair and a shelf bracket using Fusion 360’s generative design workspace. The outcomes can be manufactured, including a 3D printable shelf bracket (that looks interesting).

Autodesk Fusion 360 | SRAM is Pushing Bicycle Componentry with Generative Design in Fusion 360



SRAM Corporation uses Autodesk Fusion 360 to make high-end bicycle components for both road and mountain. For SRAM, weight, stiffness, and cost are the three big factors that must be considered when designing parts. There are additional manufacturing constraints, as well. In a competitive industry, for a company that is trying to push limits, traditional methods are insufficient.

SRAM uses its incubator to grow knowledge and understanding. The incubator offers opportunity space to improve our products and examine new manufacturing and modeling methods. Generative design and additive manufacturing will be critical to achieving future goals. Generative design produces different results in comparison to traditional methods which could enable deprecation of manufacturing processes. This means that instead of a complex multi-step process, maybe a part can be designed in only one or two steps.

Using Fusion 360 generative design to design a full-sized 3D printable rim



In this video I show how I use generative design in Autodesk Fusion to design a full-sized 3D printable rim to put under my Mercedes. This video is a bit different because I show more in depth the design process. I haven't rehearsed this so I'm sometimes figuring it out for myself, but I think the result is awesome. Student uses Autodesk generative design at Airbus internship



Student Sergei Zimbelmann of Hamburg University of Applied Sciences developed a hydrogen driven Octocopter drone while working as an intern at the Airbus Research department. He used Fusion 360 for the original designs then optimized specific parts using generative design technology. Generative design helped him go beyond topology optimization and explore a lot more variables in the design process based on multiple manufacturing methods and materials.
