How much do instructional designers make?

If you’re thinking about working in instructional design, then it’s a good idea to know what type of salaries and hourly rates to expect.

In this video, we’ll dive into earnings data from a variety of instructional design reports. Learn how much money salaried or freelance designers can expect to earn.

We’ll look at instructional design earnings data from my 2021 Instructional Designer report, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (2020) data, and the Learning Guild’s (2018) eLearning report.

I’ll also share my experience of working as a freelance instructional designer from 2018-2020.

This information gives you a better idea of what to expect when you enter the instructional design job market.

How much do instructional designers make? What is their hourly rate? This video discusses this question that I get from students all of the time.

Many new instructional design & eLearning freelancers wind up getting burned on contracts. By not getting on the same page with the client from the start, they risk doing unpaid work and souring the client relationship.

I've been there. That's why, in this video, I share some of the freelance contract "must-haves" that I've picked up over the years. Implementing langauge about these topics (and standing my ground when clients request work that's out of scope) has helped both my peace of mind and my business's profitability.

Hopefully you will avoid some of the mistakes that I made and manage your client relationships well from the start.

And remember, I'm not a lawyer! Consult a lawyer if you want legal help with your contracts.

A career in Instructional Design is a great career for anyone who loves learning and helping others develop and grow. One of the things that I love about my instructional design career is that there are so many different job options that you can pursue as an instructional designer.

You can wear just the instructional designer hat or you can wear the instructional designer / eLearning developer hat or you can be the instructional designer / eLearning developer / LMS administrator / trainer.

Every organization treats instructional design differently. Aside from different hats, there are different spaces and environments that you can work in as an instructional designer. You can work in a corporate setting, a HigherEd setting, or work as a freelancer!
