When we start learning UX design, as hopeful junior designers we think that our main goal is to make people's lives better. We want to make the world a better place through design. And then reality hits and we're forced of creating deceptive, evil and sneaky things with the sole purpose of taking more money from the user. You'd be surprised to see how many big companies do these dark patterns on purpose. They didn't all design themselves! Let's explore the dark side of UX.

Also, some people want to change the word DARK in dark patterns to something else - I believe this is going too far. The word dark in this case comes from actual darkness, as in bad things happening during the night. There is no other connotation here. It's light and dark.
