Design for Social Impact

As IDEO.org’s website states, “the social sector needs a design organization that is willing to do things differently.” At the forefront of innovation, IDEO.org creates impact in the lives of low-income communities around the world through designing, teaching, and inspiring localized solutions to global systemic challenges. Known for their human-centered design, Ben Chase will go into what it takes to deliver success at IDEO.org and the innovations they are seeing and implementing around the world to address some of today’s most pressing issues.

Featuring Ben Chase, managing director, IDEO.org, and Joe Heritage, ’17SIPA, design lead, Columbia Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Design.

Equity-Driven Design Thinking: Enhancing Traditional Human-Centered Design with an Equity Lens

Recently, there’s been increased interest in the use of design-thinking within K-12 education. But too often, this theory fails to acknowledge the role of institutional bias and individual blind spots. During this session, DC Public Schools’ Design Lab and Equity Strategy & Programming Team will share hands-on strategies, practices, and lessons learned with other equity-minded practitioners interested in making their human-centered design work more inclusive and equitable.

Session Learning Outcomes:
Understand how EquityxDesign enhances traditional design by acknowledging the importance of designer and user identities – including race, class, and gender identities.
Use an equity lens to reflect on current strengths and growth areas within your classroom, school, or organization to identify areas to apply EquityxDesign practices.
Practice various equity-focused empathy tools to build a deeper understanding of yourself and your user.

Presenters:
Constance Parham, Manager, School Design and Innovation, DC Public Schools Design Lab
Lizz Rene, Manager, Equity Strategy and Programming, DC Public Schools Design Lab

Human-Centered AI: Realiable, Safe & Trustworthy

This talk with Prof. Ben Shneiderman is the first event in a series of online talks by the Dyson School of Design Engineering. The slides accompanying this talk can be downloaded here:
drive.google.com/file/d/11qTglM2_OwaF3VdoqowSeHVmCYxBQfSi/view?usp=sharing

Human-Centered AI (HCAI) represents a fresh way of thinking. In the past, researchers and developers focused on building AI algorithms and systems, stressing the autonomy, correctness, and efficiency of machines rather than human control through user interfaces. In contrast, HCAI puts the human users at the center of design thinking, emphasizing user experience design. Researchers and developers for HCAI systems stress measuring human performance and satisfaction, valuing customer and consumer needs, and ensuring meaningful human control. Achieving HCAI will increase human performance, while supporting human self-efficacy, creativity, and responsibility and respecting human values, rights, and dignity.

The next step is to bridge the gap between widely discussed ethical principles of HCAI and practical steps for effective governance. I propose 15 recommendations at four levels of governance: team, organization, industry, and government. The recommendations are intended to increase the reliability, safety, and trustworthiness of HCAI systems: (1) reliable systems based on sound software engineering practices, (2) safety culture through business management strategies, and (3) trustworthy certification by independent oversight and government interventions when needed. Core Studio Public Lecture: Virgil Abloh, “Insert Complicated Title Here”

Virgil Abloh (Rockford, IL 1980) is an architect, engineer, creative director, and designer. After earning a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin Madison, he completed a Master´s degree in Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. It was here that he learned not only about design principles but also about the concept of collaborative working. He studied a curriculum devised by Mies van der Rohe on a campus van der Rohe had designed. After completing his degree, Abloh soon took on the role as a creative director for Kanye West and for West´s creative think tank “Donda“.

Throughout Virgil Abloh's career, he has received numerous awards in the realms of art and design. Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh™ began in 2012 as an art project titled PYREX VISION. In 2013, Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh™ was introduced as a seasonal men's and women's fashion brand, which has grown to include the production of furniture designed by Abloh. In 2015, Off-White™ was one of eight finalists for the LVMH Prize in Paris. In 2016, he was inducted into the BOF 500 “The People Shaping The Global Fashion Industry” List. In the same year, he was one of five nominees for the category of International Urban Luxury Brand at The British Fashion Awards. In 2017, Abloh was one of five nominees for the category of Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent at The CFDA Awards. Additionally, in 2017, Abloh was selected as a special guest to show his Spring Summer 2018 Men's OFF-WHITE c/o VIRGIL ABLOH™ Collection in Florence, Italy during Pitti Immagine Uomo 92. In 2019, Abloh's work will be the subject of a focused retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, where he will show new work alongside previously unseen works from his past.

2021 Distinguished Lecture: Helen Nissenbaum, Contextual Integrity

The University of Washington's Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering 2021 Distinguished Speaker Series welcomed Professor Helen Nissenbaum for the talk, "Contextual Integrity: Breaking the Grip of Public-Private Distinction for Meaningful Privacy."

Privacy is one of the most urgent issues facing information technology and digital media. While many discussions about privacy have focused on whether or not personal information should be shared, we also need to talk about what constitutes appropriate and proper sharing of information. Information should be distributed and protected according the norms that govern different social contexts such as the workplace, schools, or among family and friends. Just as people constantly negotiate appropriateness while living and working in different social contexts our information systems also need to function with regard to social norms and values.

In this talk, Professor Nissenbaum discusses appropriateness, or integrity, in regards to information privacy and critiques notions of a public/private dichotomy when it comes to thinking about privacy.
