How to Get an Instructional Design Job With No Experience

So many instructional design jobs ask for 3-5 years of experience, but how are you supposed to get experience if you don't HAVE experience?

The key thing to remember when you face this question is that most employers want someone who can quickly hit the ground running on their team. And to contribute quickly, you really need to have the right skills.

By developing your skillset and showing your skills off in the best light on your portfolio website, you can hop directly into roles that ask for years of experience.

Freelance eLearning Contract Must-haves - Freelancing 101

Many new instructional design & eLearning freelancers wind up getting burned on contracts. By not getting on the same page with the client from the start, they risk doing unpaid work and souring the client relationship.

I've been there. That's why, in this video, I share some of the freelance contract "must-haves" that I've picked up over the years. Implementing langauge about these topics (and standing my ground when clients request work that's out of scope) has helped both my peace of mind and my business's profitability.

Hopefully you will avoid some of the mistakes that I made and manage your client relationships well from the start.

And remember, I'm not a lawyer! Consult a lawyer if you want legal help with your contracts.

If you have any other questions, please leave a comment letting me know :)

How to Become an Instructional Designer in 2022

Would you like to learn how to design effective and engaging scenario-based eLearning experiences? 👉 Get the free Become an ID checklist: devlinpeck.com/become-an-id-checklist

In this video, we’ll dive into the full eLearning design and development process that I’ve used to secure high-value client projects. And I’ve helped people in the bootcamp use this process to land some of the most competitive instructional design opportunities.

Much of the eLearning that you may have seen is designed more like an information-dump than an engaging, story-driven experience. This process will help you design immersive learning experiences that capture people’s attention and help them perform better on-the-job.

In addition to helping your audience, you can use this process to create a portfolio project that will help you stand out in the market.

The step-by-step eLearning design process is:
1. Identify the Need: Determine if there is an opportunity for improvement
2. Create an Action Map: Map out the actions you want people to practice.
3. Write the Storyboard: Create the text-based blueprint for your eLearning experience.
4. Design Visual Mockups: Design the visual layout for your eLearning experience.
5. Develop a prototype: Develop a prototype for your project.
6. Develop the Final Product: Complete the final product.

I’ll also discuss how you can add moments of delight and help enhance transfer for your audience.

Throughout the video, we’ll explore portfolio projects where people have used this eLearning design process effectively.

To explore these portfolios and projects for yourself, visit the showcase: devlinpeck.com/showcase.

As always, thank you for the support!

Can I share my previous work in my instructional design portfolio

Got some awesome work you've done and want to share in your portfolio? Not so fast, in this video we will talk about things you should consider before linking that learning experience. This is a portion of a livestream I did in January 2022, an ask me anything. In this video, I'm joined by my dear friend Joseph Suarez of Instructional Redesign podcast and eLearning Out Loud on YouTube.
If you'd like to catch the replay of this livestream, you can view it here: crowdcast.io/e/amacara
I also have resources from this livestream that are open to everyone here:
