Do You Need an Instructional Design Degree or Certificate



When people want to become an instructional designer, one of the first things that they think about is whether they need a formal degree or certificate.

If you're trying to go the corporate route and land a high-paying job with good work-life balance, then you likely do not need any sort of degree or certificate.

What you will need, however, is the right skillset (and a portfolio to show off that skillset). In this video, we break down whether you need an ID degree or certificate based. I hope that by the end of it you can make an informed decision about whether a degree or certificate is right for you.

If you’re thinking about working in instructional design, then it’s a good idea to know what type of salaries and hourly rates to expect.

In this video, we’ll dive into earnings data from a variety of instructional design reports. Learn how much money salaried or freelance designers can expect to earn.

We’ll look at instructional design earnings data from my 2021 Instructional Designer report, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (2020) data, and the Learning Guild’s (2018) eLearning report.

I’ll also share my experience of working as a freelance instructional designer from 2018-2020.

This information gives you a better idea of what to expect when you enter the instructional design job market.
