PCB Design for Mechanical Keyboards Pt.1 - Layout Selection and Configuration

In this video, we'll be starting on a design series for mechanical keyboard PCBs. Specifically, I walk through the process of selecting and configuring a layout within Keyboard Layout Editor and then using said layout to generate a reference file we can leverage in the future within Swill's Plate & Case Builder. While these tasks might seem fairly mundane, I think it's important to start with tools everyone is familiar with before delving into the more technical aspects of the process like CAD. Hopefully you'll come along for the ride!

The Switch Matrix - PCB Design for Mechanical Keyboards Pt. 3

In this video, we'll be reviewing the switch matrix, a design paradigm that is ubiquitous across mechanical keyboards, in preparation for organizing our switches within our schematic and, eventually, printed circuit board. Instead of just laying out the principle plainly, I try to arrive at a wiring strategy intuitively without relying on my experience from my past projects. Let me know what you think in the comments!

The Factory | Designing a Custom Macro Keypad for KiCad

We designed a custom macro keypad to improve our KiCad workflow. The PCB was designed in KiCad, fitted with rotary encoders, leds and Cherry MX Blue switches all powered by a Teensy board. A custom enclosure was then modelled in RS Design Spark and 3D Printed on our Ultimaker S5.

The KiPad groups all the useful PCB layout functions for the left hand, leaving the right hand free to stay on the mouse - no more jumping back and forth to the keyboard. It has everything we need daily: Lay tracks, change layers, visibility settings, grid/track sizes - there's even media controls for those deep-work tunes.

KiCad PCB Generator quick demo

kbpcb.mrkeebs.com/

I have always struggled with manual processes and when I decided to play with designing a keyboard PCB I couldn't bare the manual process of aligning switches, drawling cutout lines and etc.

Keyboard PCBs share almost the same base: they have switches, they have USB ports, they have controllers, etc. The positioning of switches is very standarized so I thought: why not automate this?

So this video is about the first alpha release of the tool I created to automate this process, please let me know in the comments how you like it.

📺 Three things to note as you watch the video:

1. There was so much to fit in this video that I had to be pretty ruthless with avoiding getting bogged down in small details. You will need to spend some time reading the documentation for Ergogen to fill in the gaps.

2. I mentioned battery connectors in the video. I have added the footprints for these to my fork of Ergogen and set them up in the latest config files (also in my repo) but I have yet to order a PCB that uses them. As such the boards you see in the video have the battery soldered directly to the board. I have a doubt as to whether the placement of my connectors on my boards will even allow the battery and connector to fit so please don’t just have my boards built without checking this is being prepared to just solder the battery directly.

3. I glossed over the soldering in this video as I wanted to keep the scope fairly broad and wanted to leave time for looking at the shields, KiCad etc. When soldering the small switches I found I needed to drop the soldering iron temperature to stop burning the pads off the board. The technique for these surface mount parts is basically the same as I show in the video for the hotswap sockets: add solder to the pads, let it cool, then place the part on top of the solder and push the foot down onto it with the iron.

‼️ Most important bit of all. When making these flippable boards the controller goes opposite on one side to the other.

PCB Design for Mechanical Keyboards Pt. 2 - Reference Specification
