KPIs answer the quantifiable piece of your goals and objectives and are the heartbeat of your performance management process. They tell you if you are making progress. Four must-haves for KPIs to work: 1. Measure - the verbal expression of what it is we will be measuring Different types of key performance indicators: ● Raw numbers To develop better key performance indicators, we utilize leading and lagging indicators. For example, a percentage increase in sales is a lagging indicator because it occurred; it’s an outcome. To make sure you’re on track, put a KPI in place to identify whether you’ll hit that increase or not. We want a combination of leading and lagging indicators when we look at our performance every month. KPIs are a necessary component of managing any business, whether public, private, or non-profit. This is because KPIs allow you to determine whether you’re behind, on track, ahead, or have achieved your objectives. Possessing knowledge on how to write KPIs is extremely valuable for any business professional. So, if you need a hand to get going, follow our 4 step approach to writing KPIs: 1 - Determine key business objectives Note – At this point, I should mention that when I use the term ‘business objectives’ in this article, I’m referring to the purpose of your actions. While some may argue that this should be called a goal rather than an objective, I would argue that the terminology is not as important as the concepts they represent. As long as the concept behind each term is well understood in your organization, there is no reason to change your terminology (even if your terminology doesn’t match that of our post – as long as the concepts do). Don’t copy your KPIs straight from someone else’s list While there’s a wealth of KPI examples available online – scrolling through industry lists, picking out a KPI and attempting to force it into your strategy won’t do you any favors. Why? Well, KPIs should be developed to contribute to achieving a specific goal or objective. If they’re not developed with a specific objective in mind, they run the risk of stealing attention, time, and money from KPIs that actually help to achieve business objectives. The best KPIs for YOUR business are designed by starting with YOUR specific business objectives. Now, this is not to say all the content available on KPI examples is useless because it’s definitely not – it’s actually an important resource. But, searching through KPI examples shouldn’t begin till AFTER you have determined your key business objectives. Read more: |
Designing To Managing DesignersMoving from a designer role into a management role is not an easy transition. You essentially go from designing, to managing designers. In the corporate design world, we're expected to make that transition with no coaching, and with no problems. Many end of stumbling through the uncomfortable transition, learning the hard way how to manage by making many mistakes. Here are three things to remember when making the transition to further your career: 1. Understand Your Job Understand that your job probably isn’t to design anymore. It is probably now more project management and client relationships. Your performance isn’t measured by your solo achievements anymore. Instead, it is now measured by your team’s achievements. It is now your job to inspire your team to do great design work. 2. Communicate Communicate your role. Tell them what your job responsibilities are, as a manger, on a regular basis. Just like the designers give you an update on what they’re working on, you should give them an update on what you’re working on as well. Communicate company goals. Understanding the big picture helps designers understand why they’re doing what they’re doing. Tell them about potential new clients. Tell them how much money the company made last quarter, and what you’re on track to make this quarter. Communicate issues. If issues arise, you have to communicate in a clear, constructive way. Don’t just shut off. Talk to me! The passive aggression and avoidance just makes things worse. Confront me like an adult, and like a boss! In my opinion, those not afraid of confrontation make better bosses. 3. Motivate Make your designers feel appreciated, respected, and supported. Keeping up office morale, is a big part of managing a team! Morale has a huge effect on productivity and general wellbeing. Be your team’s biggest advocate. Give them credit where credit is due.
