IT'S. HERE.

The Logic Pro X 10.5 update is finally here and it has given us some amazing features, improving Logic Pro immensely. Amongst the new features are Live Loops, Multi-Sampler, Q-Sampler, a whole new workflow with Drum Machine Designer, a step sequencer, and tons of new stock drum kits and samples.

Today I'm going to be showing you my new workflow for making quick drum patterns in Logic Pro X 10.5. We're going to be using the new Drum Machine Designer by dragging and dropping samples from our All Files window, making an easy to use workflow and a much more intuitive way of doing drums in Logic. Finally, Apple has answered other DAWS like FL Studio and Ableton Live with a stock integrated step sequencer and sampler that are simple to use but extremely powerful.

The step sequencer was launched a few months ago in the newest update of logic pro x. In this video, I'll show you how to use samples in logic by using the drum machine designer and the step sequencer together. We'll learn how to import a sample right into the logic drum machine designer. We can pitch it, cut it, stretch it, a lot of different things. Then we'll plug them into the step sequencer and use this to make melodies.

In this video, Berklee Online professor Jeff Baust goes in depth about the Logic Pro X drum kit designer. He demonstrates how to edit presets by changing drum kit pieces and then editing the timbre of each piece using the gain, tune, and dampen knobs.This can be done on every piece of the drum kit, from the kick to the cymbals. He also shows how to access editing for auxiliary percussion, such as cowbell and tambourine, within the designer, and how to change the MIDI mapping. This video is from the course “Producing with Logic Pro.”

Jeff Baust is a professor in Berklee’s Synthesis and the Music Production and Engineering Departments. A composer, audio engineer, educator and multi-instrumentalist, he has created scores for the ESPN, New England Sports Network (including music for the Bruins and Red Sox), Avid, Sony, Polaroid, Sharp, Reebok, Lotus, and others. He works primarily in his own facility, Coral Sea Music. As an audio engineer, Jeff has worked on projects for such artists as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, NBC-TV, Andre Previn, Itzhak Perlman, Jessye Norman, and Dawn Upshaw, as well as labels such as EMI, Philips, Nonesuch, and many others. Specializing in digital audio production, Jeff works with technologies such as Sonic Solutions, high-resolution audio (96k/24bit), HDCD encoding, and mastering as well as forensic audio and restoration tools. Jeff holds a M. A. in Composition from the University of California, Davis, and a DMA at Boston University, where his primary area of concentration was electronic and electro-acoustic composition.

In this video, I go over the workflow enhancements I use regarding the drum machine designer and quick sampler plugins.

The drum machine designer is a container of multiple quick sampler plugins. You can write midi as a whole from the drum machine designer. This may be good for writing full drum beats that have different kit samples.

When you open the drum machine designer, you can select individual pieces of the quick sampler plugin instances. This allows you to write the sample in different pitches within the piano roll.
