As promised, three weeks after my initial thoughts, here's how it was like to actually use this laptop as the main designing machine for three months. We used Sketch, Figma, and Illustrator practically every day.

The key things are the new keyboard, performance, thermals, and fan noise. I also tested the laptop on some very large design files with dozens of complex artboards.

Is the MacBook Air 2020 good enough for product design? Or do you need a "Pro" laptop for it? Watch the video to find out :)

I finally got my hands on the brand new Base Macbook Air M1! This is a much-anticipated upgrade to the Apple eco-system and a departure from the previous Intel chips. There have been some exciting new developments from Apple. Firstly they replaced their reliance on Intel to deliver the chips, the second is them producing their own Apple silicon M1 Chip for the new line of Macbook Air, Macbook Pro and Mini devices. While the architecture is exciting, there's another massive takeaway all product designers, user experience specialists and app developers out there need to know and prepare for. I'll also cover some of the exciting bits to do with the new Big Sur OS.

My quick first impressions after the Apple Conference in October 2021. They showed new MacBook Pro 14" and 16" with the new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, increased performance, better battery, mini LED screens, notch camera, 1080p video calls, no touch-bar, magsafe, hdmi and sd card slot.

Definitely laptop geared more towards the pros. But is it an overkill for UX design? Watch to find out.

So what is the best laptop you can use if you want to work in Sketch? Or InVision Studio? Obviously a Macbook, but which one?

We tested the 12" MacBook, a 15" MacBook Pro (2016) and the newest mid-tier 2020 MacBook Air.

Also, there's a 5-second unboxing experience, as this is not an unboxing channel ;-)

Still waiting for Sketch on the iPad Pro though!

I finally got my brand new M1 13" MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM, so decided to test it in Sketch on a couple of very complex files. I tested it against my 2016 Quad-Core i7 MacBook Pro 15" and the results were ... mindblowing.

Those new computers will likely move the bar of what is possible to do/design on a laptop. As UX / UI Designers we'll be able to accommodate more artboards than we'll ever need in a real-world scenario.

This is great, as it will give us enough power overhead to think about creative ways to build those screens.

Choosing a Mac is important but more important is to just get into designing and making money by accepting freelance jobs. So don't wait for enough money to buy a maxed-out 27" iMac. Buy a cheap Mac, make fast money and upgrade your gear if necessary.
