Organizational Design and Structure

Designing and redesigning the organization in response to internal and external changes is a key managerial function. Organizational design is the process of selecting and managing aspects of organizational structure and culture to enable the organization to achieve its goals. One of the most important outcomes of organizational design is organizational structure, or the formal system of task, power, and reporting relationships.

Organizational structure is the core of what coordinates, controls, and motivates employees to cooperate toward the attainment of organizational goals. When the organizational structure is aligned with organizational needs, it results in greater organizational efficiencies and less conflict.

An organization chart is a diagram of the chain of command and reporting relationships in a company. As organizations grow, they often create multiple organization charts for each major division or functional area. In addition to illustrating the chain of command, organizational charts show the division of labor, which reflects the degree to which employees specialize or perform a variety of tasks as generalists.

The number of people reporting directly to an individual is that person’s span of control (some experts call this the span of management). When an organization creates a hierarchy, it outlines supervision relationships by giving some employees authority over others. Centralized organizations concentrate power and decision-making authority at higher levels of the organization. In decentralized organizations the authority for making decisions affecting an organization is distributed.

Organizational structure has a significant impact on the culture, effectiveness and performance of an organization.

What Would Plants Look Like on an Alien World I The Isla Project: Episode 1

In the first episode of the Isla project, we discuss the plants that call Isla home, as well as the means by which they reproduce. Pollinators are vitally important on a planet like Isla, so we also take some time to discuss how various animal species have coevolved with the flora of their environment.

All art was made by and belongs to me unless explicitly stated otherwise.

E&S Insights Webinar Series: Hierarchy in Organizations: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Hierarchies of authority - typically pyramid-shaped structures of delegated formal authority - have become the default template for organizations of any scale today, in any sector. Why have they become so prevalent? The simplest and probably most uncontroversial answer is that they are the best-known organization design we have to manage complex interdependence among a large number of individuals. It is hard to find examples of large collaboration systems featuring significant interdependence that do not rely on hierarchy. Examining the few instances we know of is helpful in this regard to point out how “special” these special cases are. Why think of alternatives? Culturally, it may have become possible for more people than ever to declare their dislike for hierarchies. This may not be universal, but there is no reason why as organization designers we should not place the satisfaction of fundamental human preferences onto our list of design criteria. Technologically, the fourth industrial revolution, with its advances in intelligent algorithms may be challenging one of the core functions of authority hierarchies through the possibility of algorithmic management.
In this webinar, Phanish Puranam (author of The Microstructure of Organizations, Oxford University Press, 2018) overviews some of his past and ongoing research on organizational hierarchies, and summarizes what we know and what remains to be learned.

Evolving NASA’s Data and Information Systems for Earth Science

In this video from the HPC User Forum, Rahul Ramachandran from NASA presents: Evolving NASA’s Data and Information Systems for Earth Science.

"NASA’s Earth Science Division (ESD) missions help us to understand our planet’s interconnected systems, from a global scale down to minute processes. Working in concert with a satellite network of international partners, ESD can measure precipitation around the world, and it can employ its own constellation of small satellites to look into the eye of a hurricane. ESD technology can track dust storms across continents and mosquito habitats across cities.

ESD delivers the technology, expertise and global observations that help us to map the myriad connections between our planet’s vital processes and the effects of ongoing natural and human-caused changes."

Organisation Dynamics of Business and Digital Transformation | Thomas Wittig | WITTIGONIA

Business and digital transformation and innovation initiatives depend highly on the support of the organisation and stakeholders such as ecosystem partners, sales channels, and supplier. Organisations are complex systems. Engaging, mobilising and empowering the organization is a highly challenging task. The inherent feedback structure in any organization determines how new products, services and infrastructure elements are being adopted by people.

Thomas Wittig, CEO of WITTIGONIA, talks about the system dynamics of digital and business transformation and innovation. The simulations with the "Management Flight Simulator" show how the changes play out over time. This enables the leaders, managers and innovators to explore how strategies and tactics impact the organization and results.

This video is a replay of the webinar series TRANSFORMATION DYNAMICS. The series includes briefings and tools about the key areas of transformation:
- Project dynamics of new development initiatives
- Market dynamics
- Organization dynamics
- Strategy and Leadership
- Supply chain dynamics
- Customer success dynamics.

ChangSchoolTalks 2018: Marigo Raftopoulos

Marigo Raftopoulos, Founder and Principal Consultant of Strategic Innovation Lab, examines the keys to success for enterprise gamification at ChangSchoolTalks 2018 on May 3, 2018. Marigo explores how the creation of business environment processes follows the same underlying principles of discipline, user empathy, creativity, co-design, and prototyping used in gamification design. In order to develop sustainable, well-built serious game experiences for organizations, she notes that there must be a pressing need; a well-defined problem; deep empathy for the players; compelling gameplay; and smart execution. By focusing more on game elements than mechanics, and thinking multidimensionally when designing games for employees – considering utility, usability, information and system quality, recognition/reward opportunities , and user support – gamification in the workplace can provide opportunities both for learning and engagement and an examination of larger-scale systemic issues.

ChangSchoolTalks is an annual professional development and networking event presented by The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education at Ryerson University. The event connects participants with leading experts in technology-enhanced learning and training.
