Developing an Online Course with an Instructional Designer

Until recently, Bob Weber’s only experience with online education were lectures over PowerPoint slideshows as part of his Doctor of Pharmacy degree about a decade ago.

Now the administrator and chief pharmacy officer at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and an assistant dean in the university’s College of Pharmacy, Weber was tasked with converting a capstone class for the MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences from an in-person lecture to an online course.

As Weber began to work with ODEE Associate Instructional Designer Steven Nagel, all his misconceptions of what online classes were like – and his apprehensions about how challenging converting the course would be – fell away. He found he was able to cover about 30% more content in the new, online course. And now he says he’d never teach it in person again.

Watch the video to hear Bob’s story.

This is my final project for my graduate program in Educational Technology. Addie consists of ...
Analyze -- includes conducting a needs assessment, finding a performance problem, and stating a goal
Design -- writing objectives in measurable terms. Specifying learning activities and media.
Development -- preparing student and instructor materials as specified during design.
Implementation -- delivering the instruction in the settings for which it was designed.
Evaluation -- Formative evaluation involves collecting data to identify needed revisions to the instruction, summative evaluation involves collecting data to assess the overall effectiveness.

Innovate Connect (2022): Designing Courses as Sustainable Learning Communities

Designing Courses as Sustainable Learning Communities that Extend Beyond Higher Education
10:30AM - 11:25AM
In teacher education, very few successful technology-driven communities exist where members work together to seek solutions to everyday problems. In 2021 we investigated Teacher Candidates’ (TCs) interactions in a synchronous online STEM Technologies course with an embedded anonymous Reddit community. This session will present a design case for social media learning communities (SMLC) in university courses. We'll discuss our lessons learned and collaborate with attendees to plan effective courses with sustainable social media learning communities for all students.

How to design learning experiences for better engagement

We’ve all been there or seen it in the wild: someone, somewhere, completely disengaged from their learning. How do we solve this common problem?

Find out in this webinar with Cara North, Senior Learning Experience Designer at The Ohio State University!

In this interactive session, you’ll team up with a virtual sidekick to solve the mystery of the learner’s disengagement. Join us and learn how to create super engaging learning activities.

During the webinar, we will:

- Define learner engagement
- Describe three constructs of learner engagement: behavioral, cognitive, and emotional
- Apply SCORE rubric to create engaging activities

You’ll leave the session with a better understanding of how to design learning experiences that keep people curious and motivated.

Unfiltered Design: An Instructional Design Project Start to Finish with Cara North

Unfiltered Design was presented at IDTX 2021 on 24th July 2021.

Often it can be helpful to see someone share their process for creating learning experiences. When reading about it, it can often seem like it's a pretty, clean & simple process. While that's what we'd all love to see, in the real world it's not like that.

In this session, I will walk through the process of creating a learning experience. I will share how I receive requests, questions I ask during the kick off meeting, how I manage the project, how it is organized, how it is reviewed, and the most important part, how it is evaluted.

OSU Bipedal Robot First to Run 5K

Cassie the robot, invented at Oregon State University and produced by OSU spinout company Agility Robotics, has made history by traversing 5 kilometers, completing the route in just over 53 minutes.

Cassie was developed under the direction of robotics professor Jonathan Hurst with a 16-month, $1 million grant from the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense.

Since Cassie’s introduction in 2017, OSU students funded by the National Science Foundation have been exploring machine learning options for the robot.

Cassie, the first bipedal robot to use machine learning to control a running gait on outdoor terrain, completed the 5K on Oregon State’s campus untethered and on a single battery charge.
