A PhD in Video Games

Dan Golding is currently completing a PhD on video games, exploring their use of space and architecture. He tweets at @dangolding.

What began five years ago with an undergraduate essay about video games has grown into a career for Dan. He teaches at the University of Melbourne and has written about video games for Crikey, the ABC, Kotaku and Hyper Magazine.

Dan's research highlights the emergence of video games as a mainstream art form that merits academic study.

Game Analytics for Game User Research - Anders Drachen, PhD

In this talk, Anders Drachen, Ph.D. will focus on how the game analytics toolkit fits into the daily operations of game development, whether you are in a small or big studio, and how it intersects games user research in particular.

Game analytics provides new ways to conduct user research, counteracting some of the weaknesses of traditional approaches while retaining essential compatibility with the methodologies of games user research. This talk provides an overview of what game analytics is and how it fits within the daily operations of game development across studio sizes, with an emphasis on the intersection with GamesUR and the synergies that can be practically leveraged across analytics and user research.

The value proposition of game analytics to game user research is simple: game analytics provides new ways to conduct research, counteracting some of the weaknesses of traditional approaches while retaining essential compatibility with the methodologies of GamesUR.

To use terminology from ‘Doom’, we are going from a single-barreled shotgun to a double-barreled one – with a grenade launcher slung underneath.

Anders will cover the theory of game analytics and what questions it can answer; how game analytics is performed; and what game analytics can offer to games user research practitioners.

#gamesUR Conference
Games User Research focuses on players’ psychology and their behaviour via techniques such as playtesting, analytics, expert analysis, and others. Game User Researchers aim to help game developers deliver players the best gaming experience possible.

The #gamesUR Conference is a biannual gathering of the world's top professionals in games user research. For more information visit gamesurconf.com

Is Houdini 3D hard to learn?
For anyone familiar with SideFX’s Houdini, it can be quite a loaded question...
There’s no doubt that it is one of the most robust software for digital content creation out there, but to better understand this question, we have to dig deeper into “What is Houdini?”, and “What are you using it for?”.

Why you shouldn't apply for a PhD

Get 10% off Squarespace by following this link: squarespace.com/simonclark

Over the years this channel has inspired a lot of people to think about doing PhDs. It's time to change that.

Of course, this title is a touch hyperbolic, but it's also an accurate (albeit negative) summary of the video. There are lots of reasons to not do a PhD, and doing one is really, really hard. Do not apply for a PhD if you want to earn lots of money, or want an easy continuation of university, or a cushy job, or even if you want to call yourself a professor one day. The only reason you should apply for a PhD is because you love doing something specific academically, and want to do that all day for three years. It's that simple.

Something which didn't come across too well in the final edit is that the point of the PhD then isn't to become an academic, or do anything for that matter, other than what you are passionate about. When you finish your thesis and submit your research to the wider world, your contract with society is up - having returned on their investment - and you decide what you're going to do next.

Lots of people decide to stay in academia because at the end of the PhD they still value doing the thing that they love more than they value lots of money or an easy life. Being an academic allows them to continue with what they're passionate about. But plenty of people leave academia after graduation because their priorities change over the course of the project, or discover something new that they're passionate about. My PhD afforded me opportunities to pursue my video making interest, and got me to the point where it was feasible for me to pursue it full time - which I did after graduation, because I valued doing that more than anything else. I'm one of a vast number of PhD exits, because there is no one 'right' thing to use a PhD for!
