In this video you’ll find out about ten easy tips to perfect your design print file that you can start using right now. If you stay until the very end of this video, you’ll see a very important tutorial about a unique feature that will help you improve your designs.

With that said, let’s start with the first tip.

1. Avoid Fade and glow effects

Try to avoid using drop shadow and fade effects or anything else that's transparent for DTG prints, as it can have unexpected results. On colored and black t-shirts, the semi-transparent parts can look very pale, grainy and discolored.

2. Simplify your embroidery designs

The embroidery area for our products, especially hats, is very small, so when it comes to embroidery, think big. Small, detailed, or complicated designs are incompatible with our guidelines and don't work well with embroidery.

3. Don’t increase the size of low-resolution files

If you increase the dimensions of a low resolution image, additional pixels are added to the image based on an algorithm. But the algorithm isn't precise, so you just end up with a larger and heavier image, which is still blurry.

4. Be careful with bright neon colors

80s aesthetics are in, and we're seeing more and more bright neons popping up in designs. Don’t be afraid to experiment, but be prepared that the print might look duller than it looks on screen.
These colors are mostly for use on displays and tend to be out of the printable range, which means they simply can’t be printed as brightly. Also, please remember that everything looks a bit brighter on screen than it does on the product, because screens are backlit.

5. Use the right file dimensions and DPI

Your print file should be at least 150 DPI and at original size.
What we mean by this, is that you can’t create a single print file of your design and then use it for a variety of different products.

You need to consider that each product type has different fabric, texture, size and a specific safe print area. This may require rearrangement of certain elements of your design to meet those conditions.
We always recommend using our templates, which already have a set DPI and size.

With Printful, you can customize product variants to have different designs. If you're selling products in different colors and want each to have a design in a contrasting color, I'll show you how to do just that. In this video, you’ll learn how to create a product, add it to your store, and sync your Printful products with multiple design variations.

Let’s start by understanding how you can sync products and what you’ll need to create custom product options.

With Printful, you can customize product variants by syncing them automatically or manually. You can find the syncing features on your Dashboard in Stores, then go to View store, and click Edit on the product you wish to customize variants for.

The Change print file button lets you make changes to your product variants and is available for all Printful ecommerce integrations that support automatic product push.

The Add variants button lets you add new variants like colors and sizes to your product through Printful and is available for Shopify, WooCommerce, and Etsy.

You can sync variants that are unsynced on any ecommerce integration by clicking Choose products. By manually syncing variants, you can explore new possibilities like adding multiple designs to the same product color. Let’s say you have 3 versions of your design. And you want them to go on a mug or a hat but you don’t want the item color to be different. You can create the options on your ecommerce store and then sync each variant to have its own design.

The ecommerce platform you sell on or the type of product you want to add more design color options to will determine which steps you take. So, we’ll cover the steps for both automatically and manually syncing product variants.

You’ll need a design that has multiple color versions. In this example, I’ll be adding this cat design to a shirt. I have prepared this design in white and black. The white version will go on darker color shirts and the black version will go on lighter color shirts.

Order tracking has become a big part of the customer experience in ecommerce, and shipping confirmation emails build trust like nothing else. Communicating with your customers about their order status will prevent confusion and even refunds.

Printful does pass on tracking information to most ecommerce platforms and marketplaces automatically, and that info can be included in your automatic emails to your customers. However, not all ecommerce platforms support this option.

In this video, we go through the process of creating automated shipping confirmation emails with Zapier, using the information that's sent to Printful, including tracking numbers. This is a full Zapier tutorial walk-through for print on demand 2020. We also give you a free HTML template to fill in and use for your shipping confirmation emails.

Zapier is an automation tool that helps you connect between apps without any technical know-how. Because Printful integrates with Zapier, you can connect with more than 2,000 apps and automate your work in different ways. When an action takes place on Printful, that event will cause something else to happen in another app. For example, whenever an order is marked as fulfilled in Printful, you can automatically send a shipping confirmation email to the customer. These automated tasks are called Zaps.

All of Printful's shipping methods have tracking, so tags like Shipments Tracking Number and Tracking URL will show that information for all of your outgoing orders. However, you should note that the tracking quality may differ from carrier to carrier.

It can take up to 48 hours for tracking info to show up in a carrier's tracking system. International shipment tracking may take up to a few days to display any updates but that doesn't necessarily mean the shipment is lost. To minimize confusion, you may want to let your customers know that in your shipping emails as well.

You can also add support resources, feedback requests, and promote your social media channels and other services in the email.

To make the customer experience even better, we recommend you also include order fulfillment estimates on your site and in your order confirmation emails. There are two types of files you can create with the embroidery Design Maker - product photos for your store and well-formatted embroidery files for your embroidered hats or apparel. You can use these files when adding products to your store.

Note that we have two generators - the Design Maker and the product push generator. When adding products to your store, you use the product push generator. You can access it by clicking “Add product” on your store’s page on Printful. The process of creating the designs on the product push generator is exactly the same as it is in the Design Maker. But the embroidery files that you create with the tool can also be used when adding products to your store. This way, you don’t have to create your designs twice.

There are a few things you should know about creating embroidery designs. The main thing to remember is that embroidery is not printing, so gradients, drop shadows, distressed textures, and shading are not possible, you can only use solid colors and shapes in your designs. This means you can’t use photographic imagery for your embroidery designs and you're limited to a 6 thread color limit per design.

If you want to use the files created in our Design Maker to order your designs or push them to your store, another thing you also need to remember is how digitization works. Before the embroidery process can begin, our graphics team needs to convert your file into a format that our embroidery machines can read. This process is called embroidery digitization.

There are two things to note about the mockups you'll get out of the embroidery mockup generator and the embroidery on your products that will be created according to the digitized embroidery file.

First, we don't guarantee that the embroidered product will look exactly the way it does in the generator - for example, the threads might go in a different direction than it is shown in the generator. It's always best to order a sample product to see if the design looks exactly how you want it to.

Second, if the mockup generator is showing a design that looks off, like some of the details don't properly show up, a stitch runs over negative spaces in your designs or there are other errors - that's the first signal indicating that you've made a mistake in your design.

Whether your details or spaces between objects are too small or there are some other issues with the design - you can be sure that, if the design doesn't look the way you want it to in the generator, the end result won't be great either.

With the advances in machine embroidery technology, it takes significantly less time and effort to scale the production of embroidered garments. If you want to join the machine embroidery trend, you've found the right place.

In this video we go through the differences between DTG and embroidery, which stitch types and embroidery styles we offer and how to design for each, as well as how to use the Mockup Generator to create your dream embroidery design.

The main thing to remember is that embroidery is not printing. So it requires an entirely different approach to creating a successful design. Gradients, drop shadows, distressed textures and shading aren't possible, and you can only use solid colors and shapes in your designs.

There's not just one way to embroider - your design might look very different depending on the type of stitch you use! At Printful, we offer two types of stitches - Satin stitch and Tatami fill. These will be the ones used on your designs.

Our machines will also recognize Run stitch as a last resort. This is used if the lettering is too small or the details are too thin to be embroidered in a Satin or Tatami stitch.

Our graphic team decides on the types of stitches that'll be the best for each design during the embroidery file digitization process.

Printful offers 3 embroidery styles: 3D Puff, Flat embroidery, or a combination of both. 3D puff uses a foam insert under the top stitch to raise the surface, giving it a pop-out 3D look. Note that 3D puff and partial 3D puff are only available for hats.

When developing embroidery designs, you should also note that the number of thread colors you use will impact the look of the hat. We offer 15 different colors, but you’re limited to 6 thread colors per design for all embroidery types. If you choose to use multiple colors, make sure the details are large enough so they'll be sewn the way you want.

The great thing about the Printful Mockup Generator is that you can see the general idea of how your embroidered product will look, not just as a vector design, but with a digitally created embroidery look. The generator creates real embroidery mockups you can use on your store.

Another thing you need to know about machine embroidery is embroidery file digitization. Before the embroidery process can begin, our graphic design team needs to convert your file into a format that our embroidery machines can read. They need to recognize things like stitch type, stitch density, and thread color.

When you submit your design to Printful as a vector file (preferably in .pdf or .eps formats), our graphics team digitizes it for a one-time fee. Also note that each style of embroidery requires a separate digitized file, as well as switching from a smaller embroidery area, like on a hat, to a bigger one, like on a polo shirt - and vice versa.

Coming up with a great design can be a lot of work and can take some time. So why not be more efficient by getting as much out of each design as possible?

In this video, I’ll show you how you can take your existing t-shirt designs from your file library and apply them to other products.

Using your best-selling designs on other products will help you maximize your profit. Think of it this way—if someone's buying a t-shirt because they love the design, they're very likely to buy a matching phone case with the same cool design.
It's also an opportunity to experiment with the designs that haven't been as successful as you'd like them to be. Maybe you just haven't yet found the right product for them!

In this video, we’ll look into adjusting t-shirt print files for posters, mugs, and phone cases.
Designs for these products need the least amount of adjustments so you can expand your catalog with ease!

We’ll also look into what you need to pay attention to when using your t-shirt designs for posters, mugs, and phone cases specifically.

Posters come in two finishes – glossy, which works well with photographs, and matte, which is good with text or pastel colors. Photographs, typography, and designs with bold, eye-catching colors are the best for posters in general.

The size and shape of posters vary, and so does the print area. Depending on your t-shirt design, you might be able to add your graphic to a poster without any need for adjustment, or you'll need to think about how to best fit your graphic in the available space. For this reason, it's helpful to keep your design elements separated into their own layers if you use design software like Photoshop so that it’s easier to move them around. And don’t forget to make sure that your design is in high quality for best results when printing!

Having a high definition graphic is essential if you want to use your t-shirt design on the larger posters–your design will scale to fit the print area, you have to make sure it doesn’t lose quality.

There are different types of mugs available so pick one that fits your brand. For example, choose enamel mugs if you have an adventurous, outdoorsy brand, or choose mugs with color inside if you have a collection of playful designs. There are also Magic mugs that let you keep your designs a surprise until a hot drink is poured into them. And if you prefer classics—go with the White Glossy Mugs that are available in two sizes.

Simple text designs work great with mugs.

While t-shirts have a print area with no obstructions, phone cases are a little more complicated.
Phone cases are more narrow and differ in size depending on the phone model and you also have to account for camera cut-outs which differ from phone to phone.

Once your products are designed, you can use your templates to order for yourself, or add products to your store.
