Most of the time I advocate for creative professions to get paid top dollar for the work that they do for clients. Either charge full price or do the work for free. But, when should you work for free? When you work pro bono. “Pro Bono” in Latin means “for the public good” and usually refers to legal work, but it is also frequently done in the design, marketing and creative industries. Non-Profits, charities and social good companies need design services as much as any company, if not more, and rarely have the money it takes to purchase what they truly need. That’s where working pro bono comes in. As a creative professional, you can build great portfolio work, create positive design karma, grow your network and help a worthy company with its mission all at the same time.

This is part 1 of a three part series on the crazy amounts of money you can make in web design and not just work as a web designer in a dead end job. I talk about offering free pro bono work and whether or not it actually pays off and gets you more paid jobs in the end. Pro bono is a simple term for free work and the questions I answer are:

Learn To Setup Website From Scratch - components of a website

There are many reasons to do pro bono work as a graphic website designer. First, beginning graphic website designers or graphic website design students can get valuable experience from doing pro bono graphic website design work for non profit organizations and low budget organizations such as Boy Scout troops, Cub Scout packs, and Churches.

Another reason to do pro bono work as a graphic website designer is tax breaks. The hours you spend working on graphic website design for free can be deducted from your taxes at the end of the year as a charitable donation. Check with your accountant or tax preparer to determine the most reasonable rate, but highest rate, that you can get away with charging per hour for your tax deductible hours so that you can claim them as a charitable donation.

The other reason to do pro bono work as a graphic website designer is experience and to build your portfolio. If you are a graphic website design student or you are just starting your graphic website design career, this can be a fantastic opportunity. Build your graphic website design resume with work that shows not only your talent but your big heart and community spirit. Build your graphic website design portfolio to increase career opportunities. And build experience and education with on the job training and experience in graphic website design.

Disclaimer before we jump into why you should be doing pro bono work, make sure that your insurance covers the work you offer.

A strong tip I can give you as well is to treat pro bono work like you would treat your paid client work.

Pro bono work can be a great way to both do good and introduce ourselves to our community as someone who is an expert therapist.

About twice a year I take on a pro-bono web project just to keep my skill sets fresh. I don't claim to be a web designer, but I do know my way around Wordpress, CSS, and HTML. With that being said, my second and last project for 2018 goes to DrtyKcks.

My guys were using Bandzoogle and it just wasn't as clean as none of us had liked. So I talked them into converting to Wordpress , then replicated and cleaned it up tremendously. It flows so much better now. And the integrated store is an added feature too.
