Raul Justiniano 02 GD is a multidisciplinary designer specializing in Experience Design for the web, apps, and digital products. He enjoys being a problem solver who cares about crafting products and experiences that are useful, usable, and beautiful. Raul currently leads as UX Design Manager at Restaurant Brand International building apps for the world's most beloved Quick Service Brands.

Ricardo De Azúa 02 IL grew up in San Juan, PR. He relocated to Orlando, FL following graduation and began his career in graphic design at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. He pivoted to digital and user experience design after launching his freelance business. He’s had the privilege to have worked at companies like Disney, Universal Orlando, and Travel+Leisure Co. As the lead product designer at T+L his focus is on making digital products that are inclusive, simple, and user-centered. He spends most of his free time with his wife and two kids and enjoys traveling with them to mountain towns like Asheville or national parks throughout the country.

Tim and I have a lot in common: We both studied Graphic Design in college, we both worked as interns at Yelp while we were in school to then work at Yelp full time after school, AND I can now say we have both worked on the Yelp for Business Owner’s product!

Rose Bock makes complex ideas simple, beautiful, and easy to understand using stunning visuals and systems. Her roots in industrial design have deeply influenced her approach to design. She is an accomplished visual designer with over 10 years of experience making brands truly shine. She specializes in UX, Web Design, Branding, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship.

Marc Choi is a Seattle-based graphic designer, art director, and design educator. His work encompasses brand identity, product marketing, and visual design. He currently works from afar as a consultant for The New York Times.

Amy Gregg is the founding creative director of A1Design. She has practiced graphic design for 27 years and during that time she has worked on projects with global tech companies as well as neighborhood non profits. She derives great pleasure from helping clients reach their goals through integrated branding systems and conceptual campaigns.

Jill Groeber is a Creative Director with 15+ years' experience, specializing in helping mission-driven organizations elevate and strategize their digital brand expression. She has worked for Martha Stewart Living in the creation of the co-branding team as well as J.Crew and West Elm. Jill is currently based in NYC working for Capgemini, a large tech company based out of France.

In its 144-year history, the Rhode Island School of Design—also known as RISD—has graduated numerous notable designers and creatives, from graphic designers Shepard Fairey and Tobias Frere-Jones, to painter Kara Walker, to cartoonist Roz Chast, to Airbnb co-founders Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia.

Rosanne Somerson became president of RISD in 2015 after a distinguished teaching career there (and after John Maeda’s departure). We speak with her about some of the common traits of RISDs most successful graduates. We also learn what she brings from her own studio practice of furniture design to her current work, how COVID has changed higher education, and about the power of a degree in the arts.

Rosanne also talks about how the overlap of disciplines leads to innovation, and the importance of staying connected to your craft.

Bio

An accomplished educator, academic leader and furniture designer, and a sought-after speaker and juror, President Rosanne Somerson is an advocate for the arts and the relevance of RISD’s unique type of studio-based education. As the 17th president she is committed to expanding inclusion, equity and access to enhance a genuinely rich learning environment full of diverse experiences, viewpoints and talents. Somerson is also a practitioner with three decades of experience directing her own furniture design studio.

Somerson has deep roots at RISD—extending back to when she was an undergraduate student at the college in the 1970s. In 1985 she returned to campus to teach furniture design, and in 1995 became the first leader of RISD’s new Furniture Design department, helping to establish its strong reputation in the field. After subsequently serving in several academic leadership roles on an interim basis, Somerson emerged as the top candidate in two separate international searches, which led to her appointment as provost in 2012 and then president in 2015.

An interview with Somerson is included in the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art Oral History Project and she has earned fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts along with the James Renwick Alliance Distinguished Crafts Educator Award and a 2019 Pell Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Arts.

today i wanted to talk about everything i wish i knew before studying industrial design in college (specifically georgia tech). industrial design is the design of physical products, and it's a great multidisciplinary major that combines art, technology, and engineering...but there's a lot i didn't know, didn't expect, and got wrong about the major.
