Dr. Andrew Nealen - Contemporary video game design challenges

Video game design has experienced a renaissance over the past decade. Parallel to the multi-million dollar games industry, independent game developers have been a constant and growing source of innovation: instead of taking years and big budgets, such developers create small prototypes and game experiments, and focus on what it takes to make games enjoyable. In this talk I will demonstrate some recent notable examples, and argue that it is the simplicity of the abstraction that makes these advances possible. Furthermore, I will discuss the concept of the "interaction uncanny valley", by which I describe how developments in visualization and animation have overtaken virtual interaction by orders of magnitude. Along these lines I will present some suitable abstractions of visuals, interactions and simulations that can be leveraged to alleviate this problem. The talk will conclude with some open problems and possible avenues for further research. Dr. Nealen is from Rutgers University. Note: Original video was 320x240.

Dr. Andrew Nealen - Design Minimalism in Video Games and 3D Shape Modeling Tools

Dr. Nealen discusses his research in human interaction with 3D design and the idea behind minimalist game design.

Dr. Nealen is an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department of Rutgers University. He was previously appointed as a postdoctoral researcher with the Computer Graphics Group (CG), at the Technische Universitaet Berlin's Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department.

Game Design as a Pathway for Digital and Information Literacy and Computer Science Education

As K-12 schools grow in adoption of online learning management systems and blended learning curricula, questions surface as to such systems' contribution to students' knowledge-building processes and learning outcomes. On the one hand, inquiry-based learning with online resources can support student autonomy and self-pacing. On the other hand, not all students experience such less-structured student engagement in equivalent ways. The research featured in this video addresses debates around instructional design of technologies for middle schooler and high schoolers, considering issues of motivation, structure, agency, and learning. One study cited also considers socio-demographic factors of digital inequality and the role of educational technologies in attenuating effects of the digital divide.

Dr. Rebecca Reynolds is an Assistant Professor of Library and Information Science in the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick campus. Her research investigates young people's social media uses and digital content creation in both formal and informal learning settings. Her work focuses currently on blended learning interventions for youth in building creativity, resourcefulness and greater interest in STEM fields. She is a faculty affiliate of the Center for International Scholarship on School Libraries (CISSL). She has received funding support from the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in support of this work.

Rutgers Equipment Room Revamps Storage Design

Rutgers Athletics was in the process of changing their brand image to Adidas. Along with this brand overhaul, the staff wanted to start fresh and be 100% organized and ready to accept all the new equipment and apparel.

After a site evaluation and deep collaboration with the client we were able to design a layout that would meet their current needs as well as provide them the flexibility to adjust to changing equipment and apparel in the future.

Rutgers Baseball Coach (Joe Litterio) thanks AALCO for design of new complex.

Rutgers University's head baseball coach came to us to us with an idea, an idea to create the best and most practical baseball/softball training facility in the state. The 12,000 square foot building is a prefabricated building they had constructed. We designed the protective netting, protective padding, custom retractable netting dividers, and a backstop padding wall with a custom fabricated frame. We also added steel doors with custom netting to give athletes easy access to the practice area.
