3 Reasons You Should Go To Graphic Design School3 Reasons You Should Go To Graphic Design School youtu.be/PwCgqqV5gE0 These are some reasons you Should consider going to College or getting a Degree to Become a Graphic Designer. Checkout More Graphic Design Videos: goo.gl/1yqkNK While I take the stance that you absolutely don't need to go to school to become a successful Graphic Designer, getting a degree or the college experience in general does have some advantages. The truth is that some jobs do screen people out based on whether they have a degree or not. In other cases it can be a good opportunity to relocate to a place with more opportunity for you. You can move to another city or country with more jobs for graphic design and marketing. College can also provide you access to resources like software and hardware you may not have in your current situation. So these may be reasons you decide to go to school for Graphic Design and Advertising. Do understand though that going to School for Graphic Design does not mean you will be a good Graphic Designer, nor does it guarantee you a job in Graphic Design. To all the Graphic Designers who want to whine about "This is why there are so many crappy graphic designers" firstly, no it's not, and secondly I have seen countless designers with Bachelors or even masters degrees that can't design as well as high school students that I've met (or trained for that fact). Some of which are also Graphic Design professors, probably because the person who hired them doesn't even know the difference between RGB additive color and CMYK subtractive color... Like My Content? 4 Reasons to Not Become a Graphic DesignerOn the subject of 4 reasons to not become a graphic design I highlight some character traits and hang ups that may in fact keep you from becoming a graphic designer. Is graphic design for you? ►►►More Video, Links, and Gear in the Description Below! ► Top 4 Overall BEST Laptops for Graphic Designers ► Day in the Life of a Graphic Designer ► Graphic Design Student Supplies and Gear Checklist I have been a professional designer for about 3 years now and before that I received my bachelors and masters degree in graphic design (that is 7 years of schooling---that took a while). During the past ten years in the graphic design field I found that there were some characteristics among my fellow students and now professional peers that made me think, maybe there are some reasons that someone should not become a graphic designer. This has led me to the video you are watching now with my 4 reasons to not become a graphic designer. 1. You should not become a graphic designer if you are allergic to hard work. If you only want to become a graphic designer because it looks fun and you want to get paid to listen to music and sketch all day. Well, I do listen to music, and I often sketch out design concepts, but this is not the crux of life as a graphic designer. As a graphic designer I am daily learning new skills, listen to up and coming technologies and considering how they will affect what I do as a designer. This is not a career where you obtain a singular set of skills and then coast for 40 years. Since graduating I have learned how to code, design Wordpress websites, create motion graphic in After Effects and Premiere Pro, as well as sharpen my skills with the standard design programs, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign. 2. You should not become a graphic design if you are NOT patient. There are going to be times when ideas are hard to come by. You will have to go through grueling research, client meetings, and trouble shooting hardware and software issues. Patience with the lack of creative ideas often comes from distraction and an over saturated work load. Sometimes you need to step away from your desk with a sketch pad, take a walk and just think critically about the design you are working on. Client meetings take time, can often feel disorganize, similar to an emotional brain dump when your friend goes through an explosive breakup. Why? Because the client is not a designer. They are trying to explain with words the image in their head. This is difficult for non-creatives and they need help getting their ideas out of their head. You should not become a graphic designer if you are not patient enough to help clients through this process. When dealing with hardware and software issues you will find that sometimes it is a quick fix and other times you are researching company websites, reading long forums and calling help centers all in which can be very frustrating. Are you patient enough to work through these times. Remember design is not just about music and sketch pads. There is some mundane aspects. 3. You should not become a graphic designer if you are not resourceful and not good with technology. You need to be a problem solver in both the creative and physical world. If you struggle to problem solve and resource how to learn new things than you may not be a good fit for graphic design. In my opinion the best graphic designers are highly self motivated. 4. You should not become a graphic designer if you have a creative agenda you are trying to push. If you think that you have all the right creative answers and that all of you clients are wrong and "They don't know what good design style is..." then you are doomed to fail as a graphic designer. The reason being? You are here to help them bring their ideas to life, not you own. If you have your own creative agenda become an artist. It is perfectly exceptable to become and artist and push yourself in your own art and creativity. ------- Support My Channel With Patreon! Should You Go To College For Graphic DesignShould You Go To College For Graphic Design youtu.be/E5aayAq0GvM Do You Need a Degree to Become a Graphic Designer and be successful? Should you go to college for Graphic Design or learn Graphic Design on your own? This is probably the question you all have asked the most in the comments. Is graphic design school the right choice? Can I get a job in the graphic design industry without going to college and getting a bachelors degree? Do they care about my education or just my portfolio? Do I really need to go to college to learn graphic design? In this video I go deep on the reasons why you may want or need to go to college as a graphic designer, why you should consider not going to college as a graphic designer, and how whether you get a degree or not, it may not guarantee you a job in the graphic design industry. One of the most important things I cover is that you need to examine your reasons for going to college for a graphic design degree. If it is to get a job upon graduation and you're worried that job descriptions will filter you from getting a job if you don't, then maybe a degree in design is not the answer. Maybe you get a degree from your college in a related field while learning graphic design on your own. A degree in marketing, communications, fine art, animation, computer science or business will be just as impressive or more so to anyone hiring you if you have strong graphic design portfolio. If your social/economic status dictates that you don't have the resources to learn graphic design on your own, then college is a great opportunity for you to get access to information and resources you may not have other wise. Going to college is also a great opportunity to move away from your current location if you don't feel it values design or provides job opportunities, and work/live in the place you want to have your career in over the next 10-20 years. Getting a degree in graphic design and putting in applications is not necessarily going to land you a job and who you interview with and how you got the interview in the first place makes a difference. If you get called into an interview based on them finding your portfolio or because your personal brand or some other work you did, the degree is not going to matter. If you were referred by someone already in the company, the degree is not going to matter. But if you "cold call" a company by just submitting an application and resume online or to HR then you are going to be filtered and may never get to show them your portfolio. You always want to be hired based on your portfolio. If you are hired on something other than your portfolio your experiences are not going to be ideal, period.' Let's talk about the cost of a Degree in Graphic Design or in General for a moment. Even if you go to community college you are spending between $3000,-$6000 if you're lucky. A traditional 4 year degree will cost you between $20,000-$30,000. Starting a career with this kind of crushing debt and little means to pay it back means you will have very little leverage in negotiating your salary. If you thought a degree gave you leverage, it really means you are walking in with debt you are desperate to pay off, which means you likely can't afford to turn down and offer. This cripples you and likely means you will be paid less than you're worth. But I will cover why design is undervalued in another video. My point is that is a lot of investment to find yourself in that situation. Places to Learn Graphic Design Online: Checkout More Graphic Design Videos: goo.gl/1yqkNK Like My Content? How I Became a Graphic Designer Without A DegreeDo you need a graphic design degree in order to be a successful freelance designer? After a lot of research into this subject of getting a graphic design degree or any kind of art degree, and after attending art school on my path to an illustration and graphic design degree and then stopping mid the process to go work in an apprenticeship under a very talented designer at an in-house publishing company, I was able to find out that it is not just about the graphic design degree to get hired. Is It Hard to Get a Job as a Graphic DesignerIn this video, I want to talk about how hard it is to get a job as a graphic designer. Is It hard to get a job as a graphic designer? Let's talk about starting a career in graphic design. ►►►More Video, Links, and Gear in the Description Below! ► Day My Life as a Graphic Designer ► Career Path Tips for Graphic Designers ► Top 4 Reasons to Not Become a Graphic Designer ► Best Computers and Gear for Graphic Designers So what does it take to get a job as a graphic designer? There is a lot of information online right now about how to get a job as a graphic designer and the best way to train for becoming a graphic designer. But before you jump into the training and dedicate the next few years of your life to getting a job as a graphic designer you want to know the difficulty of getting a job as a graphic designer. Right off the bat make sure you know that the first job you get will be the hardest to obtain. Why? Well, you are fresh, you have very little experience and usually, a meager portfolio, to say the least. So I will uncautiously say that YES, your first graphic design job will be hard to get. You will need to work hard to get a job as a graphic designer. One way you can gain experience as a graphic designer to help you get a job is to work for a company as an intern. Internships will give you that real life on the job experience and companies like it because they do not have to take a big risk to "test you out, so to speak. After you have an internship or two on your resume it will not be as hard to get a job as a graphic designer but it will still be challenging. Is it hard to get a graphic design job without a degree? Well, it depends on the employer you are looking to receive employment from. If they are a large company with a lot of bureaucracy than you may receive some kickback, but if your portfolio is good, and you have good communication skills then you may be able to get a job as a graphic designer without a degree. At the end of the day, the best way to get a job as a graphic designer is to have a very good portfolio. The key to getting hired as a graphic designer is that portfolio. It doesn't matter how many degrees you have or how much experience is on your resume. If you don't have good work you will not have a good chance to get hired as a graphic designer. ------- Support My Channel With Patreon! They develop the overall layout and production design for applications such as advertisements, brochures, magazines, and reports. Graphic designers, also referred to as graphic artists or communication designers, combine art and technology to communicate ideas through images and the layout of websites and printed pages. They may use a variety of design elements to achieve artistic or decorative effects. Graphic designers work with both text and images. They often select the type, font, size, color, and line length of headlines, headings, and text. Graphic designers also decide how images and text will go together in print or on a webpage, including how much space each will have. When using text in layouts, graphic designers collaborate with writers, who choose the words and decide whether the words will be put into paragraphs, lists, or tables. Through the use of images, text, and color, graphic designers may transform data into visual graphics and diagrams to make complex ideas more accessible. Graphic design is important to market and sell products, and it is a critical component of brochures and logos. Therefore, graphic designers often work closely with people in advertising and promotions, public relations, and marketing. Frequently, designers specialize in a particular category or type of client. For example, some designers create the graphics used on product packaging, and others may work on the visual designs used on book jackets. Graphic designers need to keep up to date with software and computer technologies in order to remain competitive. Some individuals with a background in graphic design become postsecondary teachers and teach in design schools, colleges, and universities. Some graphic designers specialize in experiential graphic design. These designers work with architects, industrial designers, landscape architects, and interior designers to create interactive design environments, such as museum exhibitions, public arts exhibits, and retail spaces.
