HOW TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL SOUND DESIGNER WITHOUT A COLLEGE DEGREE

Hey guys, this is a really special video. I lay out a completely unique and unheard of road map to go from being a complete novice to a highly paid sound design professional. No gimmicks. If you're a beginner or previously unsuccessful sound designer, editor, or recordist... this video is gold for you.

Listen in on my talk with a young and aspiring sound designer as I answer some of the most common questions newcomers have for the field. Around the 8 minute mark I begin laying out a straightforward path to becoming a senior sound designer much faster than the "traditional" path of college to internships to the long and slow climb up "the ladder".

I highly recommend listening to the entire talk though as I give tons of pointers and mindset advice that all came from my personal journey of having to try and fail on many levels. This way you can avoid the mistakes I made and expedite your journey to the top of the industry.

This is a new series I call "Tools, Theories, and Mindset". I'll be regularly making videos like this to reveal industry secrets, the tools you should learn that are actually needed (skipping the frivolous things that beginners always waste time learning only to never really need once they start their professional career) and mindset advice to make sure you're fully optimized to lead the most successful career as possible.

The goal here isn't for me to show off or build myself up; but to build a helpful and encouraging community that we can all gain inspiration and guidance from. I am very open to learning stuff from you guys, so please share any tips or tricks you have or can think of during these videos!

SOUND DESIGN for FILMMAKING | Tutorial

Every sound effect of mine in this tutorial/video : bit.ly/My-Sound-Effects
Sound design in our filmmaking process is extremely important, it's not something I've always paid a lot of attention to but the more I've progressed as a creator/filmmaker in this industry I've learnt the power of sound effects and how it can have such a strong impact on our visuals and the emotion of the audience.

In this tutorial of a basic travel style montage/film I touch on a few tips and topics on how to manipulate sound effects and where to use various elements such as risers, drones, ambience, underscores and transition type sound design to bring your visuals to life.

I created this Essential Flow SFX pack/bundle with my close friend and composer Daniel Deuschle after realising I owned so many different sound packs and only used 1 or 2 sounds from each. So we set out to create over 120+ essential sound elements for creators who want to add another layer of depth to their edits. This sound effect pack is something I've been incorporating into my edits and found is extremely useful for various types of edits. I really hope these essential sounds can be of use to others and after time we could continue to cater more variety for all your needs.

4:06 - 4 Your Uniqueness is the gift

The 100% Organically Sourced sample pack was the brainchild of artist & activist Madame Gandhi and the Woodstock, NY-based music collective and retreat, Sound MANA. Working in collaboration, they sought to create a collection of sounds that'd help creators connect to nature. They captured unique, high-quality field recordings of plants and animals in nature to observe how they'd be used as electronic sounds.

Madame Gandhi shared, "So often as a producer, I find myself loving what is available to me online, and yet I do not know where the sound came from. I want my audience to be inspired by what nature can offer. With this pack, I intended to contribute to a movement that thinks critically about not only the source of the instrumentation but also the content in our lyrics. As an artist and producer, I see an enormous opportunity in being able to provide music and sounds that elevate the collective consciousness. By making this pack, we hope that the Splice community finds joy in reconnecting with nature."

These field recordings were processed with Madame Gandhi's signature organic percussion, vocals, synths, FX, and more. She also crafted Astra presets, leveraging the synth's ability to leverage brown and pink noise and incorporating low-end into these sounds. The processed loops present a variety of keys and tempos, while some of the field recordings were left untouched. The resulting pack is a collection of truly unique Astra presets, loops, and one-shots you won't find anywhere else, all with a touch of nature.

Kiran Gandhi, who performs as Madame Gandhi, is an artist and activist whose mission is to celebrate gender liberation. She has toured drumming for M.I.A, Thievery Corporation, and most recently Oprah on her 2020 Vision Stadium Tour with morning dance party Daybreaker. Her mathy percussion, uplifting music, and talks have been critically acclaimed by The New York Times, Billboard, NPR, and more.

Sound MANA is a music retreat in Woodstock, NY dedicated to the exploration and study of sound through one’s reclaimed relationship to nature. Sound MANA facilitates the artist’s creative practice through a series of lectures, sonic excursions into the surrounding untamed landscape and social gatherings indulgent in local gastronomy.

The Trap That Most Sound Designers Fall Into

Demo reels and portfolios are plenty useful, but do they matter nearly as much as most people in game audio think?

Well, almost every budding composer and sound designer tends to think that reels are the end-all-be-all when it comes to their career.

They feel like, once they make some magical, perfect demo reel, that people will finally see their value, their worth, and start knocking down their doors to hire them. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth.

The audio designers who do focus on their reel to the exclusion of everything else get trapped. They spend all their time working on something they *think* is important, but ends up barely mattering in comparison to everything else they could have been focusing on.

In this video we dive into the demo reel trap, how to avoid it, and what to focus on while shoring up your portfolio.
