HOW TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL SOUND DESIGNER WITHOUT A COLLEGE DEGREE

Hey guys, this is a really special video. I lay out a completely unique and unheard of road map to go from being a complete novice to a highly paid sound design professional. No gimmicks. If you're a beginner or previously unsuccessful sound designer, editor, or recordist... this video is gold for you.

Listen in on my talk with a young and aspiring sound designer as I answer some of the most common questions newcomers have for the field. Around the 8 minute mark I begin laying out a straightforward path to becoming a senior sound designer much faster than the "traditional" path of college to internships to the long and slow climb up "the ladder".

I highly recommend listening to the entire talk though as I give tons of pointers and mindset advice that all came from my personal journey of having to try and fail on many levels. This way you can avoid the mistakes I made and expedite your journey to the top of the industry.

This is a new series I call "Tools, Theories, and Mindset". I'll be regularly making videos like this to reveal industry secrets, the tools you should learn that are actually needed (skipping the frivolous things that beginners always waste time learning only to never really need once they start their professional career) and mindset advice to make sure you're fully optimized to lead the most successful career as possible.

The goal here isn't for me to show off or build myself up; but to build a helpful and encouraging community that we can all gain inspiration and guidance from. I am very open to learning stuff from you guys, so please share any tips or tricks you have or can think of during these videos!

UW Certificate in Audio Production -- Learn More

Learn more about the Certificate in Audio Production from instructors Jason Devore and Glenn Lorbecki, both notable recording industry professionals in Seattle. Click here:
pce.uw.edu/certificates/audio-production.html

Video Transcript:

[Glenn Lorbecki] One of the very first album projects I ever worked on was a little alternative rock band called the Violent Femmes. We're not professional teachers; we're teachers who are professionals.

[Jason Devore] What this program offers to students is a solid foundation in technical, practical, and creative skills in audio production and that's going to help them to get where they want to go much faster. It's like getting the expressway of education in this field.

[Glenn Lorbecki] One thing I really love about my gig is that every day it's something a little different. You know, one day it's game audio, the next day we're doing commercial audio for television, the next day we're doing a blues record, and then who knows.

[Jason Devore] In the first class, the students study microphones and microphone design, speaker and speaker design, digital recording consoles analogue recording consoles, outboard processing equipment and they also take field trips to local various studios and equipment manufacturers.

In the second semester, the students spend time applying what they learned in the first semester by actually listening to microphones and comparing speakers and comparing outboard equipment and just hearing how they sound.

[Glenn Lorbecki] They get to dig right into the projects that we're working on a regular basis, so I think that's a really cool advantage.

[Jason Devore] By the time they move on to the third project oriented quarter, they start combining what they learned in the first two quarters along with their own creative sensibilities to complete a music recording project or sound design for a video project.

[Glenn Lorbecki] When I started teaching in the class in the 90's people said, "Oh I want a job like yours. I want to be a staff engineer for a recording studio" and so we taught people how to align analogue tape machines and do all the maintenance things that you do in a big studio. Nowadays it's pretty different. People's career paths have changed. Rarely do we see positions even open in a recording studio for a staff engineer. Typically, we see independent engineers. Typically we'll see people who work on projects out of their own studio or small project studios. And so rather than teaching someone how to be a staff engineer in a large facility, we teach someone to make the most of the tools that they have available to them, whether it be a small microphone and a laptop or ten thousand dollars' worth of semi-pro recording gear.

Graduates of this program have gone on to be recording engineers, certainly. But we also see a lot of people getting involved in post-production whether in the audio or the video side. We've also had a couple graduates that have gone on to work in the corporate world.

When they leave our program, they have the ability to go into any audio environment in the world and understand what's going on and know when things are going right, and more importantly know when things are not going right and how to fix it.

[Jason Devore] So if you're interested in audio in general, or you're interested in music recording, or if you're interested in sound design for games or television or film, this is a good class for you. You'll be learning from some of the best in the field and you'll be working alongside colleagues who are as excited and interested as you are, you'll have a lot of fun.

Architectural Acoustics & Audio Systems Design: Integrated Acoustic Design for a Recording Studio

Download Your Free Music Production Handbook Now: berkonl.in/3dBto9H
Learn More About Berklee Online’s Master of Music in Music Production: berkonl.in/2Dsn9qp
In this video, Berklee Online professor John Storyk gets into major considerations you need to make when thinking about your own recording studio. He brings frequency analysis, reflection control, isolation techniques, and internal room acoustics together with the concept of integrated acoustic design. He discusses the implications of iterative design, in which the design process is constantly informed and refined by the interacting aspects of integrated acoustic design, and frequency-dependent design, in which a treatment will interact differently with frequencies across the sound spectrum. The objective remains the same: building an accurate listening environment that has the correct amount of quietness in it.

About John Storyk:
John Storyk is best known for designing Electric Lady Studios with Jimi Hendrix, shortly after completing his architectural studies from Princeton. As an independent designer, engineer, and principal designer of WSDG, he has been responsible for more than 3,500 world-class audio/video production facilities, including studios, radio stations, video suites, entertainment clubs, and theaters. His work includes private studios for Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, Ace Frehley, Oven Studios (Alicia Keys), Roc the Mic (JAY-Z), and others. He is an adjunct professor of Acoustics and Studio Design at Berklee College of Music, Boston and he is the co-author of Berklee Online’s Architectural, Acoustic, and Audio System Design for the Modern Music Production Studio course, part of the Master of Music in Music Production program.
