What is structured cabling in networking (Structured Data Cabling)



What is Structured cabling in Networking? What is meant by structured cabling and why is it important. The design and installation of a cabling systems will support multiple hardware systems providing the infrastructure to connect a phone, PC, CCTV Camera, Wi-Fi, TV or Music server.
Structured Cabling Basics
The structured cabling system should cover all elements of the building hardware and technology requirements and bring them all into a central design. This design would include the cabinet space and locations and whether they are in a single location or split over several floors and how the various locations are linked whether via copper or fibre optic cabling.

Why is Structured Cabling Important?
Without a cabling infrastructure that is structured for all technology your future growth will be limited.
Data Cabling Standards
The data cabling systems is administered under a guideline of set cabling standards so that installations follow a consistently of installation and quality with an allowance of expansion and coverage of the technologies it is installed to link and operate
Structured Cabling Standards cover a range of expectations such as
• How the cabling should enter a building and be terminated
• The type, construction and size of the entrance facility
• The construction and size of the communications room and cabinet
• The number of cables to allow per user and workspace area
• The containment allowances for these cables
• Installation and terminating guidelines for the cables
• Testing and labelling expectations
Network Cabling Design
What is structured cabling in networking design based on? The correct design of the structured cabling will provide predictable performance and aid future expansion. Furthermore assist in easier future relocations, moves and changes
In essence it’s looking at the cabling design like an architect would do with a building or home and see how best to bring all the required elements together and work as one
The design will consider whether to cable directly to each location where desks and furniture are not expected to move or whether to cable to distribution points which then link locally to desks allowing for easier future moves and re-arrangements of desks and furniture
Categories of Cabling
Structured cabling can consist of a single specific standard of data cabling such as Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a or fibre optics. It also in some cases will specify different categories of cable dependant on what has been requested and specified by each hardware provider.
Data Cabling Testing
Structured cabling also outlines a consistency of termination, testing and labelling. There are several standard of terminations when it comes to copper data cabling and fibre optic data cabling. Problems arise if different standards are followed by different installers.
Testing parameters and standards are also important as without fully tested data cabling results the end user will not know if that cable has been
• Install correctly and within the maximum distance
• Installed in the correct separation distances and bend radius
• Been terminated correctly both ends
• Has been tested and confirmed to work to a set standard of transmission tests
Without these test results showing full passes the user will find problems in their hardware performance in the present and ongoing into the future
Structured Cabling Labelling
The consistency of labelling is also a very important part of a structured cabling installation. The labelling should be designed in advance and follow an easy to follow outline. The labelling should specify some or all of the following.
• The Cabinet or Floor Number
• The Outlet Number
• The floor box or cluster number (in some cases)
Different floors or cabinets will also at times have different colour outlet labels and panels
An example would be a blue label marked 3/15/4
(3rd Floor, Floor Box 15, Outlet number 4)
Structured Cabling Documentation
When it comes to the correct documentation, the completed data cabling systems should be accompanied by the test results and a full set of drawings and documentation
This will depend on the size of the building and the requirements of the end user but can consist of the following
• Marked up drawings with outlet numbers for each location
• Communication cabinet layouts
• Floor to floor cabling schematics
• Test Results
• Manufacturer data sheets

A proper cabling system design is paramount to a well-functioning cabling infrastructure. As with any other major project, the key to a successful cabling installation is planning. A proper cabling-system design is simply a plan for installing the cable runs and their associated devices. So what is a proper design? A proper cabling system design will take into account five primary criteria:

1. Standards Update - Network Cabling Design Skills — Commercial Buildings

DESIRED STANDARDS AND PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS
Of the proper cabling design criteria listed, standards and performance characteristics is the most critical. Standards ensure that products from many different vendors can communicate. When you design your cabling layout, you should decide on standards for all aspects of your cabling installation so that the various products used will interconnect.

Additionally, you should choose products for your design that will meet desired performance characteristics. For example, if you will be deploying video over your LAN in addition to the everyday file and print traffic, it is important that the cabling system be designed with a higher-capacity network in mind (e.g., Gigabit Ethernet or fiber optic).

What are the Structured Cabling System Components (Structured Cabling System Components)



What are the Structured Cabling System Components? The majority of projects all consist of a similar set of structured cabling system components. There are 6 areas that are generally found in every data and telephone cabling installation.

The Basic components of Structured Cabling
6 Structured Cabling System Components
-Incoming Services or Entrance Facility
-Main Communications or Equipment Room
-Separate Sub Cabinets or Telecommunication Rooms
-Backbone Cabling linking them together
-The general work areas
-Horizontal data cabling serving the work areas

The Incoming Services or Entrance Facility
This area is where the incoming services enter the building and create a demarcation point. This can be for both data and telephone cabling. For example a BT distribution point or a blown fibre housing box.

The Main Communications or Equipment Room
In short the communications room is where all the hardware and control technology are house for a client. Likewise this is generally the same for multi floors or single floor use. The incoming active broadband router, firewall, servers storage and main hardware are generally housed in the main communications room.
In addition other technology and hardware will be housed in this central hub. These can include the following
• Audio Visual equipment such as satellite boxes, storage, music servers, and digital signage controllers
• CCTV recording equipment and screens
• BMS Controls
• Access Control
• Smart lighting controllers
The communications room also has to take into consideration present and future requirements. Furthermore the required power, cooling and security. However in smaller buildings the space might just be a wall mounted cabinet on the wall of an office.
Separate Sub Cabinets or Telecommunication Rooms
Generally when the building is over a large space or on several floors there will be more than one communication room space. Thus telecommunication rooms or satellite cabinets are created
The cabinet locations are designed to ensure that no data cabling runs exceed 90 metres. This is the standardised maximum length of any copper data cabling installation
Compared to the main communications room they don’t usually contain a lot of or any of the control technology and hardware. In this case they house additional data switches and the patch panels for the data cabling to that dedicated cabinet or room.
Likewise in many designs the main communications room will house the data cabling to that floor and maybe one or two others. Furthermore in a smaller installation they may only be one comms room that all the data cabling runs back to
As a result of creating these satellite cabinets they require connection back to the main comms room. This is done by backbone cabling.
Backbone Cabling
When the project requires more than one set of cabinets the design of backbone cabling becomes important. Generally these are fibre optic cabling installations but can at times be installed in copper
Structured cabling design is based around a star design. Thus each outlet has a data cable that runs directly back to the comms cabinet. Similarly the backbone design follows the same pattern
All the sub cabinets will have a direct link back to the main communications room. In some installations the sub cabinets will also have links between them to create additional resilience in case of broken or damaged cables.
The backbone cabling is generally fibre optic cabling due to its great bandwidth capability. In addition it is also able to carry multiple channel connections over a single cable. For example each of the following may require a separate connection between comms room and sub cabinet
Data Connection
VoIP phone systems
CCTV
Access Control
BMS
WiFi
AV
Fibre optic cabling achieves this by installing a 16 core single cable to cover this. In contrast 7 individual copper cables would need to be installed to achieve the same connections. Furthermore the fibre optic will generally be oversized such as a 24 core to allow for future growth.
The type of termination points will depend on the location. Will they be floor boxes or grommets or mounted on the wall. In addition will waterproof or IP rated termination boxes be required for external or warehouse areas

Before you pull your first cable to the first location you must first have a plan. In this video, Jim Gibson, describes a method for designing a floor plan. First you take a picture of the paper floor plan or blue print with your smartphone. Your smartphone must have paint program to manipulate the floor plan and document what you're doing on the floor. You can then use smartphone picture floor plan to communicate the design to your team members. Your team members can help you plan how you will cable your building. You can email the plan to your customer, are to your boss to get final approval. Don't use paper floor plans / blueprints anymore they don't hold up to the pencil marks. This idea of network design applies to ethernet, Cat6, Cat5e, network cabling. Network cabling floor plans / blueprints do not sound exciting but if you want to complete a job in a professional way you must have precise and accurate floor plans. You must know where each cable and jack is going, who's going to install it, where it's going to be installed and then documented. Remember no job is done until the paperwork is complete. When you're done you can even add Jack numbers under each jack location. The customer then will have a record of the network. This is probably the best idea we have ever seen for cabling design.

What is Structured Cabling Standard (TIA-568-C)

Before the 1990s, data and voice cabling systems were proprietary, which means they were vendor-specific. Each vendor had its own cabling system design and it was hard to have products from different vendors to work together.

This no-standard approach had many problems as shown in the list.

In the mid-1980s, the EIA was asked to develop a specification that would encourage structured, standardized cabling. In 1991, the TIA and EIA published the first version of the "Commercial Building Telecommunications Cabling Standard", better known as TIA/EIA-568.

So who are responsible for making these standard specifications?

A number of organizations around the world are devoted to the development of specifications that encourage interoperability. As long as the manufacturer follows the specifications, their devices should be able to work with other networking devices without any problem.

In the United States, there are the American National Standards Institute, or ANSI, the Electronic Industries Alliance, or EIA, and the Telecommunications Industry Association, or TIA.

The International Organization for Standardization, or ISO, is responsible for international standards around the world.

In the United States, we follow TIA/EIA-568-C as the structured cabling standard. This standard covers the following topics.

Subsystems of structured cabling. Such as horizontal cabling, backbone cabling, work area, telecommunication room, etc.
Cabling installation methods and practices.
Connector and pin assignments
Cabling media types and performance specifications for horizontal and backbone cabling.
Connecting hardware performance specifications
Recommended cabling topology and distances
The definitions of cabling elements, such as horizontal cable, cross-connects, telecom outlets, etc.

The TIA/EIA-568C standard is actually composed of 4 documents.

The TIA-568-C.0 defines the generic telecommunications cabling for customer premises.

The TIA-568-C.1 defines the commercial building telecommunications cabling standard.

The TIA-568-C.2 defines balanced twisted-pair telecommunications cabling and components standard.

The TIA-568-C.3 defines optical fiber cabling components standard.

The ANSI/TIA-568-C.1 standard breaks structured cabling systems into six areas:

Horizontal Cabling
Backbone Cabling
Work Area
Telecommunication Rooms and Enclosures
Equipment Rooms
Entrance Facility (or Building Entrance)

I will briefly introduce each area in the following slides.

Horizontal cabling, as specified by ANSI/TIA-568-C.1, is the cabling that extends from horizontal cross-connect, intermediate cross-connect, or main cross-connect to the work area and terminates in telecommunications outlets.

Horizontal cabling includes the following:

Cable from the patch panel to the work area
Telecommunications outlets
Cable terminations
Cross-connections (where permitted)
A maximum of one transition point
Cross-connects in telecommunications rooms or enclosures

This figure shows a typical horizontal-cabling infrastructure in a star topology from a telecommunications room. The horizontal cabling is typically connected into patch panels and switches/hubs in telecommunications rooms.

Backbone cabling is also called vertical cabling, cross-connect cabling, riser cabling, or intercloset cabling.

Backbone cabling is necessary to connect entrance facilities, equipment rooms, and telecommunications rooms and enclosures. This figure shows backbone cabling that connects an equipment room with telecommunications rooms.

Backbone cabling consists of not only the cables that connect the telecommunications rooms, equipment rooms, and building entrances but also the cross-connect cables, mechanical terminations, or patch cords used for backbone-to-backbone cross-connection.

The work area is where the horizontal cable terminates at the wall outlet, also called the telecommunications outlet. In the work area, the users and telecommunications equipment connect to the structured-cabling infrastructure.

The work area begins at the telecommunications area and includes components such as:

Patch cables, modular cords, fiber jumpers, and adapter cables
Adapters such as baluns
Station equipment such as computers, telephones, fax machines, etc.

The telecommunications rooms and telecommunications enclosures are the location within a building where cabling components such as cross-connects and patch panels are located. These rooms or enclosures are where the horizontal structured cabling starts from.
