When it comes to having a laptop for all of your designing, drawing, and photography needs, I think I found the right one for you. Because when it comes to being a creator, it’s not just about the tech specs, it’s how you use it.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 is an all-plastic build that is thicker and sturdier than the old flimsy plastic builds. It has a soft-touch plastic keyboard deck to nestle your palms for the long design or drawing projects.

The Flex 5 weighs in at a mere 3.3 lbs and is only 0.82 inches thick making it a great on the go laptop. And with its 52 Wh battery, my tests indicate that you will be able to reach roughly 6 - 7 hours of web browsing battery life and 4.5 hours of heavy design tasks.

If you’re an on the go photographer than you will find the ports selection quite pleasing:

As I pull open the lid of this laptop, which is easily accomplished with one hand, I am greeted by a 16x9 FHD 14in display reaching 215 nits of brightness and a color gamut range of 64% sRGB - 48% Adobe RGB - 48% DCI-P3… So honestly my biggest complaint with this laptop is the color gamut range. Otherwise, it handles the benchmark tests coming up in just a minute. Like a champ.

Now onto one of the most important aspects of this laptop… the touch sensitivity and accuracy of the screen and pen combination. Concerning the Lenovo screen, you can opt to get a pen with 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity using the Active Pen 1 or 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity with the Active Pen 2. I will link both in the Description below.

If you decide to purchase this laptop I would recommend installing the Wacom Feel Drivers giving you the ability to customize yours on-screen drawing experience.

I tested installing the Wacom Feel drivers on Flex 5 and it is compatible. So although the driver does not come preinstalled on the Flex 5 you can install them once you purchase the laptop. I will include a link to the driver download in the description below this video.

Now that we have walked through the build and physical features of this laptop let’s dive into the performance benchmarks.

Lenovo Flex 5 Specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 4500U (6 Cores 6 Threads)
GPU: AMD Radeon 6 Graphics (Renoir)
RAM: 16GB DDR4 (Soldered - Not Upgradable)
Storage: 256GB SATA SSD

Now concerning the multitasking capabilities of this laptop do note that it can handle running Indesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator all at the same time with ease.

Now as I started to work in one of the programs that increased the power consumption of the CPU, but it was nothing too laborious that the laptop couldn’t handle.

So overall the Ryzen 5 4500U is a good design, drawing, and photo editing multitasking CPU.

Now I wasn’t going to include video editing benchmarks, but I thought why not. Do note that this laptop does not handle 4k playback in Premiere Pro very well, at all.

While editing 4k footage on a 9-minute project at fourth quality, the Lenovo Flex 5 dropped 4392 out of the total 16177 frames that made up the entire project. This was somewhat useable, but I would not recommend it. I would only use this laptop for 1080p video editing.

The only two complaints I have about this laptop are the color accuracy and trackpad.

Otherwise, if you’re looking for a thin and light 2 in 1 laptop that handles multitasking in the Adobe Design Suite, can export 4k footage pretty quickly, has great touch sensitivity via the pen and screen combination, while also providing great battery life and solid build quality then the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 is right for you.

When it comes to selecting a laptop for graphic design in 2021 there are a lot of choices. The question is: which laptop should you choose for graphic design? Well the one that has the right specs for your use case as a graphic designer of course.

Sounds simple, but there are a few questions that need to be addressed such as: Will you be using your computer for video editing or motion design. If that is the case then you will want a dedicated GPU and an H series processor to have the power you need to get your tasks done.

If you are mainly working on projects from a strictly graphic design standpoint you will be working in the Adobe Design suite with apps such as Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator. Or for you trendy designers: Figma, Sketch, or Affinity Designer.

The goal of this video is to not only recommend to you my top 12 favorite laptops in 2021 for graphic design, but to inform you on how to pick the right one for your specific use case, or use cases.

I hope this brings you a massive amount of value and you get the perfect laptop for your graphic design needs. We've come a long way since my first iteration of this video back in 2017. I am proud to say this video is MUCH better than that first edition.

A 2 in 1 laptop is one of those options for graphic designers that focus highly on illustration, logo design, and sketching out ideas for their designs. Low and behold there is not one option for a great 2 in 1 laptop, that would be the way to easy. There are many options to choose from. So I took some time to sit down and develop my checklist for the best 2 in 1 laptop for graphic design in order to help you pick the best laptop for your needs.

1 Usefulness

The first thing you want to consider is do you really need a 2 in 1 laptop? How often will you REALLY use the 2 in 1 feature? Are you someone that likes to use touch screen devices or is it a novel idea to you and you want to give it a shot.

I am one of those people that get really excited about a new piece of technology, or app that will totally unlock the extraordinary designer inside of me that was just waiting for this piece of technology to release that designer.

I use the new-fancy device for a few weeks and then the flashy-ness wears off and I am back to my normal routine. So, I will ask again. Do you really need a 2 in 1 laptop?

Are you someone who is constantly sketching out ideas on your device, then email or air dropping those sketches to your computer and you want to save time and do all of your sketching right on your main laptop/device? Them the 2 in 1 laptop may be for you.

Are you an illustrator, digital painter, or photo editor and you want to have touch screen capabilities with the option to fold away or detach your screen?

Then the 2 in 1 may be the right buy for you.

2 Performance

Next, let’s consider the performance you need. If you are only going to be using your computer for the basic graphic design tasks like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign then a basic/affordable 2 in 1 laptop would suit you well.

That would be something along the lines of an i5 or an entry level i7 processor, 8 - 16GB of RAM and an integrated GPU. Nothing fancy, but enough power to run your daily tasks.

But, if you are a design that is going to need to do some heavy lifting - advanced photoshop work, motion design, and video editing (on top of the normal day to day graphic design tasks) - then you are going to need to look at getting a 2 in 1 with higher performance capability.

I’m talking about no less than an i7 processor, 16 - 32 GB of RAM, a dedicated GPU like the NVIDIA GTX 1050 or AMD RX Vega, and a Fast SSD.

With these specs, you will be equipped to run both illustration, logo sketches, or digital painting, along with some motion design and video editing.

I will discuss the models I think best suit each individuals needs in a little bit.

3 Usability

Usability is another essential aspect of purchasing a computer for your design needs. When it comes to 2 in 1 laptop the portability is unbeatable. These laptops are historically lightweight, thin, and durable.

They are great on the go machines and perfect for any student, freelancer, or individual running from meeting to meeting.

Now, one thing that I never want anyone to overlook is how they will be interacting with the ports on their machine. I use basically all of my ports all of the time with my Dell XPS 15. In fact, I run out of ports. So I want to make sure you are considering your day to day operations.

Do you need an SD card slot to bring in pictures, USB ports for external drives and USB drives, an HDMI or DisplayPort when you are at your workstation to have dual monitors, or perhaps a USB-C port for faster connectivity.

Think think think about your day to day life and what you may need, then cross-reference the machines I am recommending and see which one fits into your lifestyle.

It is important to remember that these are budget laptops for Graphic Designers. With that in mind, these laptops will not run as fast as some of the higher-end laptops available on the market. For instance, when you are using one of these laptops there are some things you can do to improve the performance.

Using a laptop with 8GB of RAM means that you will use up the RAM memory faster as you open up multiple programs. This will cause the laptop to slow down. You can improve the speed of the laptop by closing any program you are not actively using. If you are working primarily in Photoshop while also having Illustrator and Chrome (web browser) open I recommend closing Chrome and Illustrator. This will use less RAM memory and will speed up your laptop.

Another thing you can do is make sure that you purchase a laptop with a Solid State Drive. SSDs are far more reliable and faster. You will be able to save projects, export, and transfer files faster with an SSD.
