Drizzle and downpours can ruin any trip, so even if you're expecting sunshine, it pays to have one of the best waterproof jackets tucked in your backpack. A quality jacket can turn a damp and miserable slog into a dry and comfortable adventure braving the elements.
So what features should you be looking for in the best waterproof jackets? This in an area where 'fast fashion' won't cut it. If you're new to lighter gear, working your way towards ultralight or going on a desert winter backpacking trip, this lightweight backpacking gear list keeps comfort and warmth in mind without an extreme base weight in either direction.

This is the gear I brought on a January trip of the 80 mile Black Canyon National Recreation Trail in central Arizona. The BCT took me five days, and I had to cache my own water--due to a lack of resources regarding how much/if any water would be out there. I learned a lot from this trip - mostly about the kind of gear I DON'T want to carry.

The exact base weight comes out to 11.41 lbs.

I greatly enjoyed making this video. I apologize for any sound issues- next time I promise to sit closer to the camera/mic!
