A day in the life of a UX Designer in San Francisco (but forreal)About a year ago I made a video about the day in the life as a UX Designer and looking back on it… I just don't think it was that useful. So, I made a new one. Hope you enjoy it! ABOUT VIDEO 👇 2. Mornings: The mornings are often reserved for clearing emails, providing answers to questions from the day before about projects (my company is international so when I'm asleep some of my colleagues are working), as well as working on different types of design documentation. 3. Meetings: The more you grow into leadership, the more meetings you may start to have. This is great though because you want to make sure the design team is represented in important product decisions. No meeting-type days are common in tech. I get a lot more heads down design work done during these days. My design team sometimes runs design jams on these days too. 4. Collaboration: I work very closely with Product Managers and Engineers. We all have important and different perspectives on the projects we work on together. Feedback is often, both in scheduled meetings and in casual conversation. 5. Variety: Product Designers are very customer focused, so we are often working with researchers to get our designs in front of customers. Part of my job is facilitating those sessions, creating documentation on what we learned, communicating it, and using the research to inform design decisions. This creates a lot of variety to my days since we are often in different stages of the design process across different projects. ⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯ FAQ ✨ Access my favorite free and low-cost resources on getting started in design: Alexa’s digital guide to help get you started in Product Design: alexaleighh.com/store/p/guide-new-product-designers MY GEAR 📷 Shop my tech gear: SOCIALS ☀️ Book 1:1 time with me! What is UX Design Bootcamp Can you get a job out of itI was able to pivot into UX design by going through a bootcamp, specifically General Assembly. I’m not sure if I’d recommend going through a bootcamp now that the market is extremely saturated. The important thing to keep in mind is, do whatever it takes to build yourself a kickass portfolio. THIS + good presentation skills will land you that next design job. -------- ✌︎ Connect with me IG: instagram.com/chunbuns -------- ✌︎ Medium article ✌︎ List of Bootcamps ✌︎ What I'm wearing -------- ✌︎ Discount codes ⇢ $500 off Springboard’s UX Design Career Track with code UXCHUNBUNS500 - tinyurl.com/springboardchunbuns -------- ✌︎ Camera ✌︎ Editing software ✌︎ MUSIC ✌︎ Business Inquiries -------- ⇢ All profits from affiliate links will be used to help maintain my blog and support local orgs in the Bay Area |
Should you try a UX BootcampOver the years, I've met with more and more people who have taken UX Bootcamps so it seems like they've become a quite popular. Since this has become a pretty common form of design education, I wanted to make a video explaining some realistic expectations I think people should consider before they take the leap. Additionally, here are some questions you can start asking yourself to help you get clearer on what is the right decision for you. 1. If you decide to quite your job to take a bootcamp, how much time are planning to give yourself before you need to find a job again? 2. Who do you want to meet? Which professional designers are working with each program? What are the mentorship opportunities? Where are the students working now? 3. Have you considered taking any programs through a design school? Why would you take a 2-4 year program? Why not? 4. How much money are you able/willing to spend on your design education? 5. What other forms of supplemental education are you ready to spend time/money with? ⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯ FAQ ✨ Access my favorite free and low-cost resources on getting started in design: Alexa’s digital guide to help get you started in Product Design: alexaleighh.com/store/p/guide-new-product-designers MY GEAR 📷 Shop my tech gear: SOCIALS ☀️ Book 1:1 time with me! A Systematic Approach To Design CritiqueThe process of reviewing design work can seem like an arcane endeavor that only senior designers and creative directors truly understand. Even then, it's frequently an opinion-laden process that can be easily steered off course by the loudest voices or non-design stakeholders. Design critique can and should be a more accessible process for everyone, from junior designers to C-level stakeholders. In this webinar, Zac Halbert covers a systematic approach that maintains focus on the right elements at the right time, and educates non-design stakeholders so they can offer more meaningful feedback rather than obstruct the design process. Zac Halbert runs the Product Design & UX track at Tradecraft, an immersive program that trains people to work in high growth startups. He also owns an independent product design consultancy called Scout Hawk Product Design Studio, where he helps entrepreneurs turn hazy ideas into concrete digital products, and Foliotwist, a portfolio and marketing SaaS company for visual artists. Zac's expertise lies in user experience design, product design, management, and rapid prototyping and idea validation that draw heavily from the Lean Startup philosophy.
