Training the Idea Muscle for Product and UX Designers - Design Tool Tuesday, Ep61

Episode 61: Training the Idea Muscle for Product and UX Designers

This week’s design tool pick is not really a UX tool, but a method. I'll showcase a powerful daily practise that will train your proverbial idea muscle. Like with any other skill ideation and coming up with the best new thing can be enhanced by repetition. This is where James Altutcher's 10 ideas a day method comes in. By practising it daily you can get into a habit of producing multiple well thought out and meaningful innovation ideas. I've been using it myself for years and I can attribute almost all decision making, meaningful insights capture, UX plans of action and much more to this method.

Note: we're not affiliated with the tool makers. It's just a great UX tool you should know about.

In this new weekly UX design, user research and product design tools series I'll share some of the best picks I've encountered to date. You'll find out about the best apps, extensions, websites and other helpful tools.

Intro to physical product design

Ahmad Alhuwwari gives an introduction about industrial design; the progression of how physical products were designed.

UX Design Vs. Product Design (Are They The SAME Thing!)

UX Design = Product Design...
Wait, WHAT?! 😱 Let's settle this once and for all! 🤯 What are the actual differences between a Product Design role, and User Experience Role...?!

Increasingly we see both UX Design, and Product Design confused, muddled and used interchangeably, particularly on recruitment portals. But what are the key differences and similarities between these two roles, and why should you apply for the specific role, not the job title?

In this video we give some tangible definitions, show how these two roles are very similar, and... how at the end of the day... these titles REALLY don't matter that much...

If you're starting out in the design industry, there are increasingly more confused by all ambiguous job titles out there, then this is the video for you! We detail the 4 key reasons why titles like these don't really matter, and why you should focus on honing your application to the individual job requirements and the needs of the employer!

Physical UI vs. Digital UI Design

"Product design" is a broad term that many believe to include both digital and physical design.

When people hear we are a product design team, sometimes, they believe our work extends to digital products. So understandably, one of the most frequently asked questions we receive from prospective clients is, "Does Hatch Duo do User Interaction design?" The short answer is yes because when you design a physical product, user interaction and user experience become crucial aspects for the product's success in the market. However, there is a crossover: while we enhance user interaction of a product, our primary aim is to focus on its external features.

Although Industrial Design, UI, and UX design are closely intertwined, there are key differences in all three design aspects. Join Hatch Duo co-founder, Jon as he breaks down the main differences between ID, or what we see as physical UI, and digital UI design.

How Do Product Managers and UX Designers Work Together

In many companies, the product manager and the UX designer roles go hand in hand. This week's post is an introduction to the UX designer role, how it's similar (and different) to the product manager role, and how the two work effectively together to deliver a great product.

Before we start to dive deeper into the two roles, let's first explain the role of the UX designer. User experience (UX) design is a discipline that covers the end-to-end experience of a product. UX designers are responsible for understanding the target users' challenges when using a particular product and then designing an elegant solution that helps users solve those challenges.

It just so happens that this overlaps with product managers' goals. It's not surprising that there's a lot of confusion where one role ends and the other begins. In fact, in many smaller startups, the product manager is also the UX designer. This person is expected to understand the market and business goals, the user needs, and the best way to prioritize features and manage a team.

However, when teams get larger, stakeholders become more numerous, and the company expands, the two roles are split into more specialized positions. This makes a lot of sense because at this point it becomes impossible for one person to take on so many tasks and responsibilities and still be effective in delivering the product.

UX Methodologies for Holistic Product Design

In this 2017 GDC talk, Maxis' Paul Rybicki explain how to make your UX designs more holistic and repeatedly referenced, so you can spend more time iterating and revising in each development sprint, while still keeping stakeholders from engineering, product or game design well informed of the current design direction and the game's design as a whole.

GDC talks cover a range of developmental topics including game design, programming, audio, visual arts, business management, production, online games, and much more. UX vs UI Design Explained with... BAD UX Design Memes

UX vs UI Design is something every designer needs to know. Typically this is explained with overtly simplistic or complicated bad design memes. You have probably seen a few of those floating around. They are also a dangerous metaphor as most are produced by people who collate user interface with user experience. While both have some overlaps, in this video I'll use the same UX vs UI design explanation memes to explain it once and for all.

how i landed ux/product design interviews at top tech companies (and how you can too)

in this video, i talked about everything i did to land ux design / product design interviews at top tech companies. i give you my best advice for product design recruitment when it comes to: design projects, creating your portfolio, your resume, applying to product design roles, and interviewing for product design and ux design internships and roles. as an industrial design student, i'm pretty much a self-taught ux designer so i did all of recruitment, personal projects, and making my portfolio outside of school. i learned all of this the hard way, so i spent a lot of time compiling all of these tips and advice together in order to hopefully help some of you who are interested in pursuing product design! remember that this is my own personal experience, but let me know if you have any advice or tips as well in the comments below!!
