Ux Design Project Timeline

This edition of the site design is a simpler successor of its previous version. Ux is kinda like practicing zen. You do it until you die. Jokes aside, you’re finished when you’re finished. Okay not really, in actuality you’re finished when something is good enough to. In this ux design proposal, we will outline the project at hand, our process for reaching your desired outcome, the project’s delivery timeline, and all project costs. As the old saying goes: If you have four hours to chop down a tree, spend the first three hours sharpening your axe.

The costing and timelines of a ux project can be given typically in many methods. Someone with a project management background will give in more detailed like resource level.

Starting a New UX Project

At the beginning of a new project, identify the level of UX effort needed, and the key deliverables you aim to produce. Identify known and missing knowledge about users and tasks to uncover gaps before they bite you.

UX Project Planning - Best Practices for the UX Design Process

Today we are discussing the UX project planning process and best practices for including it in your overall UX design process.

Project planning is a pretty generic idea, but it is incredibly essential for UX designers of any size and scope. If you are working with a team, it is even more important to make sure that everyone contributes and agrees upon a plan before jumping into a longterm multistep project.

A project plan is not just for UX designers. Any type of designer, whether you are a brand, user interface, marketing, or visual designer, this process can definitely apply to you.

Before planning, I highly recommend having already discussed your hard deadlines and goals with your team and stakeholders. This way you can figure out what milestones you need to include in your plan. If you don't do this, it might be hard to accurately plan for the different deliverables you will need to complete.

The first thing you need to do is to write out the key phases of your plan. These can also be thought about as the different parts of your typical design process. For example, research, design, testing, implementation.

Once you come up with your key phases, then you can list out the different activities that you will need to complete before moving on to the next phase.
You can think about these activities as the different steps you take in your day to day job that helps you arrive at your solutions. I prefer to list these activities out in a checklist so when I am working I can keep it next to me and check them off to see how I am working towards the next phase.

Once you get all of your activities written down, I suggest rating each one on a complexity scale. This will help you figure out how much time you will need to allow for you and your team to complete it. Then you can look at your overall timeline, and see how much time you should allow for each phase. Make sure to pad your timing so you don't underestimate and mismanage your stakeholders/client's expectations.

If you are getting stuck, try working backward! This puts you in a different mindset and allows you to think critically about all of the steps you need to take for this specific project.

The format you choose for your plan is totally up to you. Most UX project plans tend to be in a chart/excel sheet, but you can also create it in a calendar, a timeline graphic, on a whiteboard, etc... the options are endless. The most important thing is to make sure your plan is formated neatly and easy to use and read. Don't spend hours designing it, just make it highly functional and accessible for your team.

I hope that this was helpful to you! Let me know what you choose to include in your plan, or if you have any additional tips.

Here are some additional resources for formatting a UX Plan

Of course, there are other ways to approach UX research, but here's how I conducted it for my Crunchyroll case study.

To help you follow along with me, I'm sharing a link to my Notion board that has all of my UX research-related deliverables that I made.

About Me:

I am a Sr. Designer with over 10 years of experience. Having worked with over 40 clients from all around the world, from startups to large enterprises I understand what it takes to create design experiences at scale.

The 6 Stages of a Web Design Project - UX Design Principles

UX Designer Kieron Woodhouse talks through the six stages all businesses should go through when launching a new website.

Designing a website can be a long process, but it doesn't have to be. It really comes down with what you want to achieve with the website.

If you're just showcasing your product or service, then it doesn't need to be a large, arduous process. Whereas, if this is a key part of the service you are offering, and it's a platform you are building online, then it can be a big project so it does depend on what you are building.

Step 1: The biggest key to having a successful website is to have a detailed spec.
Step 2: Wireframes help you understand the content thats going to be on that page, the structure, the user flow, and how the sites going to work without the glossy finish of the design.
Step 3: The look and feel is personal to the business, the brand values need to be clear otherwise the design can go completely wrong.
Step 4: The development stage is simply where you make the design come to life.
Step 5: There's testing to see: if a feature of the spec works, usability testing, also improving.
Step 6: Launch!
