How Do Product Managers and UX Designers Work Together

In many companies, the product manager and the UX designer roles go hand in hand. This week's post is an introduction to the UX designer role, how it's similar (and different) to the product manager role, and how the two work effectively together to deliver a great product.

Before we start to dive deeper into the two roles, let's first explain the role of the UX designer. User experience (UX) design is a discipline that covers the end-to-end experience of a product. UX designers are responsible for understanding the target users' challenges when using a particular product and then designing an elegant solution that helps users solve those challenges.

It just so happens that this overlaps with product managers' goals. It's not surprising that there's a lot of confusion where one role ends and the other begins. In fact, in many smaller startups, the product manager is also the UX designer. This person is expected to understand the market and business goals, the user needs, and the best way to prioritize features and manage a team.

However, when teams get larger, stakeholders become more numerous, and the company expands, the two roles are split into more specialized positions. This makes a lot of sense because at this point it becomes impossible for one person to take on so many tasks and responsibilities and still be effective in delivering the product.

UX Project Planning - Best Practices for the UX Design Process

Today we are discussing the UX project planning process and best practices for including it in your overall UX design process.

Project planning is a pretty generic idea, but it is incredibly essential for UX designers of any size and scope. If you are working with a team, it is even more important to make sure that everyone contributes and agrees upon a plan before jumping into a longterm multistep project.

A project plan is not just for UX designers. Any type of designer, whether you are a brand, user interface, marketing, or visual designer, this process can definitely apply to you.

Before planning, I highly recommend having already discussed your hard deadlines and goals with your team and stakeholders. This way you can figure out what milestones you need to include in your plan. If you don't do this, it might be hard to accurately plan for the different deliverables you will need to complete.

The first thing you need to do is to write out the key phases of your plan. These can also be thought about as the different parts of your typical design process. For example, research, design, testing, implementation.

Once you come up with your key phases, then you can list out the different activities that you will need to complete before moving on to the next phase.
You can think about these activities as the different steps you take in your day to day job that helps you arrive at your solutions. I prefer to list these activities out in a checklist so when I am working I can keep it next to me and check them off to see how I am working towards the next phase.

Once you get all of your activities written down, I suggest rating each one on a complexity scale. This will help you figure out how much time you will need to allow for you and your team to complete it. Then you can look at your overall timeline, and see how much time you should allow for each phase. Make sure to pad your timing so you don't underestimate and mismanage your stakeholders/client's expectations.

If you are getting stuck, try working backward! This puts you in a different mindset and allows you to think critically about all of the steps you need to take for this specific project.

The format you choose for your plan is totally up to you. Most UX project plans tend to be in a chart/excel sheet, but you can also create it in a calendar, a timeline graphic, on a whiteboard, etc... the options are endless. The most important thing is to make sure your plan is formated neatly and easy to use and read. Don't spend hours designing it, just make it highly functional and accessible for your team.

I hope that this was helpful to you! Let me know what you choose to include in your plan, or if you have any additional tips.
