So You Wanna Make Games | Episode 8: Sound Design

What makes a good sound? In games, strong sound design effectively communicates what’s happening to and around you, provides feedback on the decisions you make, and helps immerse you in the game experience. In this video, a few sound designers discuss how to think about sound in games, cover some basics in sound terminology, and the sound designer’s toolbox.

Just The Job – Video Game Sound Designer

In this really cool Just The Job film, the Force is strong with us, as we find out about some of the many jobs that go into making a big-budget Star Wars videogame! Just The Job is a First News Live series that focuses on lots of different jobs that you might be interested in when you leave school, and we’ve been working with BT to investigate how technology is changing jobs and what skills people need to make the most of it in the workplace.

What’s the job?
Audio designer or sound designer.

Who would I be working for?
Any of the thousands of companies all over the world that make games and apps.

What do they do?
The audio designer is responsible for everything you hear when you play a game, from the music and sound effects to the voices of the characters and any background noises, like traffic or birdsong.

What sort of work is involved?

Creating sound effects from recordings you have made, or finding ready-made effects and adapting them as necessary, such as changing the pitch. If you can’t find something suitable, you might have to get creative and record or make the sound yourself.
Making sure that all of your sounds and music fit in with the game and that they play at the right times.
Thinking about what audio can add to the game, to ensure the player has an immersive experience.
What skills do I need?

Critical listening skills, with the ability to interpret sounds and reconstruct them to fit your needs.
Familiarity with modern audio processing standards and tools, including software such as Reaper and Wwise.
Creativity is a key skill, especially when you need to come up with a sound that no-one has ever used before!
Good communication skills, so that you can talk to other people working on the game about what they want on the soundtrack.
What qualifications do I need?
A degree or similar qualification in something like audio/sound design, sound technology, etc will be useful, but practical experience will be incredibly valuable, even if that’s your own sound design projects.

Anything else I need?
A portfolio/showreel that demonstrates your sound design skills and experience. Plus you obviously need a passion for games and an understanding of game audio, with a willingness to share your opinion and listen to others about what you do and don’t like about audio in specific games. So that’s your excuse to play lots of games, too!

What hours would I work?
At Criterion (who made the game in the above film), the working week is 37.5 hours and they support flexible working, wherever possible. Although Criterion avoid it, some game studios require overtime when there are deadlines to hit. This is known in the industry as ‘crunch time’ and could involve working late nights and weekends.

Where would I work?
There are game studios all around the UK, although there are many more around London and the southeast of England. Here’s a useful map that shows you where they’re based.

How much would I get paid?
This is quite a tricky question to answer, as it very much depends on experience as well as location. Graduate sound designers can expect a starting salary of £20-25,000 per year, with senior audio directors earning anywhere from £70-90,000. Many audio designers work on a freelance basis, meaning they’re self-employed and don’t get a set annual salary, but instead charge per day or per project. It’s worth bearing in mind that there aren’t many audio roles available and finding work can be incredibly competitive.

Can I do work experience?
Developers like Criterion do take people on for work experience, but this is very popular and is booked long in advance.

How might the job change in the future?
Gaming is getting more and more popular, whether it’s simple app games for phones or huge and complex games for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, and whatever the next, more powerful consoles are. The biggest games are becoming more like films (even better, in some cases), so audio designers are going to have to reach even higher standards.

Riot Games sound design internship reel (Read Description)

All sounds were created by Liam Beckley
I used wavetable synthesis as well as my own audio recordings (recorded with Shure SM7B) to create these sounds.
DAW: For this project I used Logic and the wavetable synthesizer Vital.
I then exported the sound files into wav files and put them into the Unity project

How I made the sounds.
For the footsteps, I thought it was important to capture the pulpous texture of the floor. I created 5 different sounds of a sponge being squished, recorded with a Shure SM7B, and put them into the project which randomized each footstep as I walked through the level.

For the brain room I used wavetable synthesis. This consisted of a sawtooth wave, which was layered on top of a noise wave as well as a harmonic series wave (that consisted of the base harmonic and the second harmonic) I created two LFO's created at different frequencies that were connected to a flanger. One controlled the "center", and the other controlled the "feedback". I also added reverb to help it belong to the space.

For the heartbeat I used Vital as well. I initially started with a sine wave and then added two more sine waves that consisted of several harmonics. I then added an LFO to the sign waves oscillator that controlled the volume. This is what mainly made the sound, sound like a heartbeat. At the end of this process I added reverb to make the heartbeat sound heavy and further impact the players experience.

For the reload sound, I recorded a metal water bottle opening and closing, as well as a screw driver twisting, and then layered a plastic bottle hitting my hand. Synching up the sound to the blaster was the difficult part, so I kept adjusting the timing and then bounced it into unity in order to correctly synch the sound of the reload.

The sounds of the red blood cells and germs were created with a noise wave and a sound wave. Then I put a low pass filter on the sign wave to avoid any muddiness

For the enemy impact sound, I hit a plastic water bottle against a wooden table and pitched it down slightly. I then layered a piece of cardboard being ripped and pitched it down an octave. I put reverb on both these sounds.

For this project I used the example Unity First person Shooter project "Creator Kit: FPS" and replaced all sounds with my sounds by Liam Beckley.

Video Game Sound Design Tutorial - Synthesis Basics: Part 1

In this video I cover the absolute basics on subtractive synthesis - one of the most basic, common, and useful types of sound synthesis you'll come across.

How To Get Work As A Sound Designer Beginner To Pro

Today I want to talk about my journey in becoming a full-time Sound Designer. While I did start my Sound Design Journey in College, I don't believe that going to school is 100% necessary in getting into the audio industry. There is so much information out there that you can genuinely learn anything you need to know through online resources and by making some genuine connections within the industry.

Everyone's journey into the audio world is different, and there is no one way to make it in this industry. If you have a genuine love for Sound and are interested in getting into this industry, I would highly recommend checking out Marshall McGees and Game Audio Analysis YouTube Videos on how they made it in the audio industries.

Becoming a AAA Audio Designer | Unreal Educator Livestream

Following the theme of “Becoming a AAA Developer,” for this stream we welcomed three of Epic Games’ top Audio Designers: Director of Audio Production Zak Belica, Audio Director Gene Semel, and Technical Audio Lead Seth Weedin.

This roundtable discussion focused on their career journeys and current roles at Epic Games. We discussed the skills needed to become audio designers, composers and audio effects artists. We specifically focused on a role called technical audio designer, which is a fairly new and dynamic role in the industry.

It has also been said that audio makes up at least 50% of an experience, if not more. With games such as Fortnite, that’s a significant contribution. Join Zak, Gene, and Seth as they share insights about both the grit and glamor of the exciting world of musical and gameplay audio design.
